Best baby wearing carriers

So now that this baby is here I'm realizing that often it's going to be a million times easier for me to just wear her vs having to lug her car seat inside places. I didn't realize that before so all I have right now is one of the seven slings which just doesn't seem to have a ton of support, but maybe I'm wrong? Which option is easiest for newborns and going through the next few months? I was looking at a ring sling, but wanted some feedback before I went with any one brand. Is there one that is better for hot weather than others?

(I'm on mobile so if someone has a link to where this was posted before, let me know and I'll go there. :) I know there was talk months ago, but I can't remember recently.)

  • I absolutely love my Moby wrap.
  • Loading the player...
  • I have a ring sling, an ergo, and a Moby. The ring sling and Moby are going to be great when he's a newborn, and the ergo can be used trough the toddler years.

  • I like a woven wrap or ring sling for the newborn stage.

When he's a little older (starting around 3-4 months), I like a soft structured carrier...I have a Boba and love it! It's nice cuz once you adjust it, it's a quick on and off.

  • I recently got the Baby K'Tan--it's just like the Moby wrap except that you don't have to figure out how to wrap it yourself because it comes already put together. It got really good reviews and seems like it'll be great for a newborn. Plus they come in different sizes so you can get it to fit your body.

  • Baby K'tan is good for newborns, just make sure you get the right size. I also have an ergo, which I prefer for older babies. I'm getting a Sakura Bloom ring sling too but haven't tried it yet.

  • We have the new ergo 360 for when he gets a little bigger and we still have our Bjorn from DS but that one really hurt my shoulders we also just ordered the baby k'tan since its very similar to the moby but you don't have to worry about wrapping it yourself

  • I actually used my Seven Slings when DD2 was a newborn, because she would sleep so well in it and I could get stuff done. When she got bigger, I loved my k'tan! I could put her facing out (she would sit almost cross legged) and she was so happy because she wanted to see everything. Now I have the Boba and it's perfect for front carrying (like when I wasn't so pregnant) or carrying her on my back (especially now with my huge belly)!

Since I live in TN (land of hot, humid summers) I knew that I didn't want a Moby. It's a lot of fabric & holds heat in. I joined a local BWI group (like PP suggested) and was able to try out several different things. To start with I decided to get a gauze wrap and a linen ring sling. I loved the feel of the woven fabrics but was really worried about getting hot so I went with something super breathable. In a few months I want to get a Tula as our soft-structured carrier.

Also, there's a bumpie (whose name I always forget) on the AP board that has a ton of carrier info in her siggy.
  • Thanks for posting this question! I have an Ergo that I used with DS, and a friend lent me her infant insert for it. But, baby has to weigh a least 7lbs for that, and my little 5lb7oz peanut is a long way from that.
I have a Moby wrap too, but I never got the hang of it with DS. There was so much extra fabric for me (I'm a skinny runner) that I had it wrapped 5xs around my waist :/. Plus, it was HOT wearing that in the summer.

    Mommy to R (8.23.11) and K (6.21.14).

  • I've been using a basic woven wrap with a front carry for DD so far. Same one I used for DS until he was just too heavy for me.

I was gifted the original björn with DS. I do like it. It's super easy to put on and put LO in but the big setback for me was the lack of lumbar support because I have weak back muscles. My only complaint and they now have a model that has the added support. DH loved the heck out of it though and wore it all the time while we were out. If I had my choice now i would probably go with the ergo or based on some research for a cheaper carrier the infantino mei tei but that's not based on my experience.

  • The Moby is good but I didn't love it. I considered getting a K'Tan but wasn't sure how much I'd use it in the summer. I do have a Beco Gemini which I like and will probably use when I need to.

I got a hava sling custom made for me by the manufacturers here in Houston. https://www.havasling.com I liked it because it has a zip pocket in the tail I can throw monies or phone if we are out and about.

  • I have a moby go which is more like a carrier (no hassle of trying to figure out how to wrap it) but can't be used until LO is 15 pounds. I went to a local bwi meeting and loved the mei tai. It's lightweight and not to hot, and it's pretty easy to tie.
  • I got the Moby for DD1 and like it once she was actually in, but it was a bit of a hassle to put on.  I used to put it on at home and wear it while driving so I could just pop her in when we got to the store- it's just too difficult to put on in the Target parking lot without the ends dragging in the dirt/making it too loose or tight/etc.  It was great for doing chores around the house, though, when DD only wanted to be held.

We had a hand-me-down Bjorn that DH used a lot, but hurt my back/shoulders after 10 mins.  We got an Ergo when she was about 6 months, and I love!  Never hurts my back injury and she feels so secure in it.  I plan to use that when DD2 is heavier and more active.

This time around, I got a K'Tan for the newborn stage- love it!  All of the comfort of the Moby but so much easier to put on.  Used it at the beach today to do the long walk to and from the car- some other mothers commented on how I was packing up our stuff like I wasn't even carrying a baby because I could move around so easily.  With an energetic 2 year old, I need something I can put on quickly and feel secure with, and I'm so happy I got the K'Tan.

I've tried out three different wrap style carriers. The Moby I hated. Like PP stated it's a pain bc you have to always wrap at home bc its so long. Also I just didn't find it very easy to use, even after multiple attempts.

The second one I tried was the K'Tan. It was ok, not as comfortable as I was hoping for. I also was right in between sizes. I was worried that once my milk came in the medium would not be comfortable at all, but large would have not held LO securely.

The one I finally purchased yesterday was the JJ Cole Agility Stretch carrier. It is by far my favorite and most comfortable. Its exactly like the K'Tan in that its "pre-wrapped", you just throw it on. However it has more stretch than the K'Tan making it a much better fit for my body. This carrier was also the cheapest!

If you have a Buy Buy Baby near you, I'd scope them out. They had about 10 different carriers all of which you can try on and test out. The only thing I'd say though is shop around bc I've been able to find a lot of these wraps cheaper on amazon :)
  • I love my K'tan for the early days. It worked great until DS got to be about 15 pounds. I still have it and plan to use it, but I am also sorely tempted to buy a nice linen ring sling. I tried one on at a local babywearing group last week, and I'm kind of in love. They're rather pricey, but they will work for toddlers as well as NBs, or so I've been told.

  • Thank you for all of the replies! I definitely have a few more to look at :) I may end up getting more than one, now.

For those of you who went with the linen ring slings, did any of you try ordering one from an Etsy seller? I'm wondering how they compare with the Sakura ones since the price is so much lower.

  • I've got the maya and the ergo this time around. Now if they'll just get these wires off my baby and let me hold him and I'll get to try them out.

  • I'd also be careful about buying a linen ring sling on etsy (and I use etsy for everything! ) the linen ones I looked at on there were around $70. I paid $80 something for my SB on amazon.com. I ended up ordering from there because I wanted the twilight color and it was sold out for weeks when I kept looking daily on SB website.
I would definitely make sure the seller accepts returns for something this expensive that you want to use daily.

  • I LOVE my K'Tan. It's similar to the Moby except way more user friendly as the fabric is already part way "put together" so to speak. I used it with DD when she was a NB through about 6-ish months, but then it got too hot as it was black and the fabric was a little thicker. I still have it, but I also got a white mesh-ish material one for this LO, I know some people who use it in the pool, and it is supposed to be better with the warm weather since it's white and mesh-ish. Also, I love that they have the sizing so you know that it's fitting your body well and keeping baby secure.

  • @TKT17‌ I am a size 0-2, (xs-s) at gap) I have a small size breezy, and both a small and medium sized regular k'tan. I suggest going to a buy buy baby (they have them in store near me) or a boutique baby store to try them on, the do stretch a bit, but I found them to be a little on the small size. It may also be worth checking out target, or your areas b/s/t sites, I've never paid more than $14 for mine (all nib).

  • I used the mobywrap with DD as a newborn, but she was a November baby. No way do I want DS to be roasting in that this summer...  or me! We used the Bjorn carrier once she got older sometimes, but then I heard about the hip issues and stopped.

We bought an Ergo with the infant insert for this time around. I'm hoping it will work well, but I have no actual experience with it.

Does anyone have size insight on the K'Tan? Most places I shop seem to have it online only and I'm not sure about M vs. L?

@TKT17‌ Im a size medium for shirts and either a size 8 or 10 and have a medium size k'tan. I should have got a small though, you want it to fit very snug.

  • I've only be doing this for a few weeks, but I do love my moby.  It is a little warm, so I wouldn't wear it walking around outside in 85 degree weather.  But it's awesome for around the house and shopping.

I was super intimidated by the idea of learning to wrap, but seriously, you watch one youtube video and be set.

  • I went to a baby wearing class early in my pregnancy so I can try on all the carriers before I had a big bump in the way.  I like the Chimparoo Mei Tai best...it was light weight (important for summers in texas) , easy to put on and didn't take al ot of space.

I can't wait to try it out once baby girl arrives

  • This is my first child and I can easily say I love my moby! If you get it in a neutral color, your SO may lovebit as well. My husband wears her around for skin-to-skin contact almost 2 hours out of the day. It's amazing

  • I would definitely recommend finding a baby wearing group in your area. I had no idea what I was looking for, but the women who ran the workshop I attended (I'm in CT) were amazing & went through/demonstrated every type of carrier out there, even the kinds they didn't like or sell themselves. I was handed-down a ring sling someone made & they helped show me how to wear & adjust it (which is more difficult than professionally made ones since the maker used smaller rings & double layer fabric). I loved the Sakura Bloom for a ring sling since it's so soft & lightweight but am gonna try to use mine first before I spend the $80. I also was looking at the JJ Cole Agility carrier, which I actually received at my shower but it was the wrong size. Once Baby's older, I'll probably invest in something like an Ergo or Tula so we can go hiking with Daddy. These are NOT meant for newborns/infants, even with the insert (it helps but they still tend to get swallowed up & overheat in the summer due to the extra material). A friend gave us their Kelty Kids frame backpack but I can't envision using that (I'm sure DH will for longer hikes though, again when she is older).

For anyone in CT looking for guidance (or anyone else interested in their online store), here is the group I found. I can't wait to bring hubby to their Cloth Diaper workshop on Saturday!
