Do you fly a flag?

Do you fly a flag outside your house? Or do people in your area? Is it regional?

I'm just curious. In Canada, it's really not something we do at all. I can think of one person in our entire city that I've seen that flies a Canadian flag... but there's quite a few Americans who fly the American flag, even while in a different country. But I think Canadians are generally quite a bit less patriotic than Americans... although I love my country and I'm crazy proud to be from here.

So, do you? Why?

Re: Do you fly a flag?

  • We do not. I do see some houses that do and many that don't, both in our old area and our new one. I'm not hyper patriotic in general so I've never really had a desire.

  • No, we don't have a flag pole. I do decorate a little for the fourth (this year not so much because of everything that is going on right now).

Growing up we had flags that were flown during the summer both at home and at the vacation house.

  • No we do not.  It is just not something that is important to me- maybe because there is a set of rules- or guidelines- and I am not up for more responsibility right now.

My growing up my family always flew a flag.  I am sure it was because my Grandfather was a vet and very proud to have served in WWII.  When he died, my grandmother arranged to have the flag that draped his coffin flown over the Iwo Jima memorial.
  •  Ooo, I like the idea of flying it just on holidays! I hadn't thought of that.Very cool!

  • A Pirates yard flag. No mount on this house, yet. Previous houses we rotated between an American flag and sports flags.

  • We do not. 99% of the houses in our neighborhood have either an American flag, a confederate flag, or both. Lots of Confederate flag bumper stickers, too. I don't know if that counts as patriotic or not.

  • We don't fly a flag, never have. Very few people do in our immediate area, though it is popular in the South.
  • We have one.  Lots of people, maybe 1/3 of our neighbors do. Also popular on our street is to change American flag out to university flag on football Saturday. Many are fans of Big Ten schools are here so lots of those flags on my street.

  • Add us to the flying one on "flag" type holidays, in the little flag holder over the garage. We suck at the rules though. It was forgotten in the dark last night.

  • We pay a Jr ROTC $30 a year to put up a flag for 5 holidays a year. Hey stay up a week then take them down and store them. It's the perfect lazy way.
  • we have 2 little ones we stick in potted plants.

my parents have a flag pole in their yard (I swear this is a southern thing- never saw it until FL- everyone has a flag pole in their yard with an American flag and a sports team flag under it). He puts it out for holidays.
  • We do. We put it up for the week of Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day. The rest of the year is rotated between sports/holiday flags.

@lollitots So what are the rules? Are you not allowed to leave them up overnight?
I believe leaving a flag up overnight is against flag code unless you have a spotlight shining on it.
