Trying to Get Pregnant

Abnormal bleeding

I'm putting the TMI disclaimer out! Lets start with some necessary info (my brain jumps right to "you're dying" or "miracle baby!".) I have never had normal periods. I started a new job in August of 2013 (teaching). This was the last period I had until February 2014 when I went in to see my primary care dr for no periods. My fiancé (a couple of weeks until he is my hubby on paper) decided we want children and it was at the request of my primary care dr to see an OBGYN. The OBGYN put me on a "provera" pill. 14 days on and my period should start at the end of the pills. (We will take clomid when we are ready to children). My first round with the pills was in May. It worked exactly as the OBGYN said. In June, I started spotting two days after starting the "provera". She said to ignore it and count day one of my cycle when I have a full bleed. Ok, fine. Came and went. Here we are in July, two weeks before my period is due and three days before I start taking the "provera" pill and I'm "spotting". It's more than spotting but not enough to fill a regular tampon. Sometimes it's pink, sometimes it's red, and sometimes it's light brown. It's on and off for two days now. Friday, July 4th it started and I felt sluggish. Friday night I went to bed around 10:30 and slept until 8 Saturday morning. I did not spend more than an hour out of bed until 3:30 pm on Saturday afternoon. I'm exhausted. For two hours I thought my cereal would come back up. Body parts are sensitive. I smell EVERYTHING. All of these symptoms point to being pregnant, but from what we can tell, I'm not ovulating. Can't get ahold of the OBGyN until Monday. Any suggestions? Info? Thanks, J

Re: Abnormal bleeding

  • No. I took one just before my last cycle started and it came back negative. My "ovulation date" was Thursday... But this whole week was most fertile week. I figured it would be too early.

  • Why am I bleeding in between cycles?
  • A pregnancy test from last cycle means nothing for this cycle. Do you temp to confirm ovulation?
If you did just ovulate there is no way for any of us or a test to say yes you're pregnant or no you're not.

Spotting/ bleeding is normal on Provera. How do you know you're not ovulating? The only way to know if you're pregnant is to take a test. I can't give you anymore info. Your timeline is a bit confusing and unclear. ETA: Never mind. All of my questions were answered while I was typing this.

Provera is Progesterone that stimulates your body to create a thick uterine lining and when you stop taking it at the end of 5/10/14 days, it makes your Progesterone drop and your lining sheds, which makes you have your 'period', which is actually just the shedding of the lining.

You do NOT ovulate when you're taking Provera every 30 days (which is what it sounds like your OBGYN is having you do).  Essentially you're taking it like birth control pills - both monthly Provera and BCP create a medicated 'fake cycle'.  If you have not ovulated by the time you start the Provera each month (which is what it sounds like is happening), then you will not ovulate while you are taking it.

The most likely reason you are bleeding right now is that you actually ovulated this month before you started the Provera and your body is having a period.  You might not be 'filling a tampon', but red blood and brown blood (which is older blood) is most likely a period.  If you need more than a liner, it is probably a period.

Some doctors/OBGYNS give people Provera for a few cycles in hopes that it will 'jumpstart' your natural cycle.  It works in some cases, and it appears it worked in yours.  Congrats.  :)

    Thank you!
  • There are SO MANY causes of abnormal bleeding.

    Pregnancy.
    Infection.
    Cancer.
    Polyps.
    Fibroids.
    Uterus issues.
    Endometrial issues.
    Hormonal issues.
    Blood disorders.

You'll have to wait until Monday, sorry.

But you said your "ovulation date" was recent, so you are ovulating?!  Your OB has no clue, you should really be seeing an RE who can actually help you with your cycles and figure out where you're at and help you in the best possible way towards getting pregnant.  OBs specialize in keeping women pregnant, not in getting them pregnant, most have little to no training in actual fertility help.  DO NOT take clomid from your OB, it's a dangerous drug that can cause permanent damage to your fertility if not taken properly - which means in the care of an RE who can monitor and administer it properly.

  • Assuming I'm ovulating, I tracked on the calendar. The blood work she did checked for other issues; she never did blood work to check ovulation.

Wtf to this whole post. OP - you need to learn about your cycle. You can't possibly know your ovulation date without basal body temping or an ultrasound. Let's start there. Have you read the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility"? Buy it. Yesterday. Educate yourself. Your post is a mess if misinformation and your doctor seems to know barely more than you. You can empower yourself to find out what your body is doing. It's not difficult, but it's never taught to women growing up. Don't jump into Clomid if you don't need it. Don't just nod your head to what your suspect OB says. Take the reins, learn your body, make educated choices.

You don't have to be rude.
  • She was not being rude.  She gave you some very useful information so you can make the right decisions for yourself.  You can't just assume, you need to educate herself like @Joy2611 said.  Not just listen to a doctor blindly.  Like she said, do your research, get a second opinion if need be, and take care of yourself.
