Weaning LO from Swaddle - WWYD

So my sweet baby girl is 5 1/2 months old and she has rolled over twice on her own now.  She doesn't do it consistently yet so I'm still swaddling her when she sleeps at night and takes naps.  I have tried allowing her to sleep without being swaddled but when I do she usually only naps for 30-45mins because she will startle herself awake.  I want to start weaning her from her swaddle and wondered if there are other swaddle types that work best to wean her from it so she can finally sleep without one.

Thanks!

We use the Halo sleep sacks. We did one arm out for a week, then both, but the "wings" are still wrapped around his body so he feels secure.

We did the same. I would have done 1 arm in longer but DD figured out how to roll over in the sack and would end up on her tummy with one arm out and one in. :( I was worried but she sleeps great now.

  • We just did this a week ago because she started rolling over on her stomach in the swaddle. We tried one arm out and it made it worse - LO would just sit and struggle to get the other arm out. We also use the Halo sleep sack with the wings wrapped around her torso. The first few nights were rough but she is adjusting. She is back to waking up once at night to eat while previously STTN but that could be more of the 4 month wakeful/growth spurt.

You could also try a zipadee zip suit but our LO didn't like it - again she just struggled to get her hands free. I stressed a lot about the transition but overall it hasn't been too bad. I don't have any advice for naps as my LO is a terrible napper and the in swaddling certainly didn't help that. Good luck!

  • I just did the band aid approach and had about 4 bad nights then she got used to being without it. She hugs her wubanub and I think that males her feel secure

We did the bandaid approach as well. It was rough for one night. But she STTN the second night. Naps have been not so good though. We have used the zipadeezip and things are better.
  • We transitioned recently. We did both arms out or used the Zipadeezip. Honestly, for us, it made no difference if she was one arm out, both, or in the Zipadeezip. It sucked. So just prepair yourself for some short naps and interrupted sleep for a week or so. It's fine at night now, no waking, but nap time was harder for her; gets easier everyday! Best of luck!
  • I'm trying to buy a zipadeezip because we've had issues getting rid of the swaddle, and I keep getting an error with my credit card. The site says to use paypal if you get credit card errors, but there's no paypal link. What am I missing? Can someone who has already ordered one please help? :)

  • We tried The Wombie. It's like a spandex bag. They are supposed to feel secure bc the fabric is tight and pushes against them, yet they can move their arms/ hands to their mouth or whenever they feel secure. LO hated it. Was mad he couldn't get hands free. Luckily we got the convertible one which converts to an arms out sleep sack.
We struggled for about a month sans swaddle. It wasn't a quick transition for us, started with naps as they were shorter. Then about a week of hell at night. Tried one arm, both went back in, both came out, used literally 5 different swaddles and variations lol. We discovered LO loves sleeping ok his side and that was our saving grace. He still isn't a great sleeper without it but we don't want to go back , good luck!!!

I'm in the middle of this too.  Wonderful sleeper since 6 weeks (7+ hours consistently)...naps always stink.  Tried using the Halo wrapped around the middle...up 5-6 times per night, and very difficult to put back down.  We ordered both a Merlin Sleep Suit and Zipadeezip.  The Merlin came first...night 1 was AMAZING...9hrs 45 min... I was in heaven.  But, night 2, not so much.  No one was sleeping until about 1am...then we got a few hours when I held him in the chair.  Night 3- woke up a lot early on, then slept 8 hrs!  Here's hoping night 4 goes well too.  The Zipadeeszip hasn't arrived yet...we will see.  Good luck!

It's been a couple more days. So far we've had good luck with the zipadeezip. I think it's because we tried cold turkey, she was ok with it, but the zippy provided enough security to make the transition even better. She slept 10 hours last night. Today naps are better.
Good luck to you mamas waiting on the zipadeezip. I hope it works for you.
