Success after IF

Clomid Question?

So I was supposed to do my first IUI this week. Got a positive on an OPK yesterday. As luck would have it my RE office is closed today and I think tomorrow is too late. Being as though we're paying OOP I think we're just going to wait until next month. I did take Clomid days 5-9, anyone get pregnant after just taking Clomid alone? Looking to lift my spirits, disappointed today.

Re: Clomid Question?

  • I did not, I know people have, but your post is making me think a few things. Were you monitored during your cycle? I'd want to know how many follies were growing before I tried on my own. That's just my own thought. Bummer that your clinic would have you take the meds knowing when you could possibly get a OPK+ and knowing they're closed today. Also a bummer in general that they're closed today. Good luck!

  • Just because you get a positive opk doesn't mean you ovulated. I have gotten several and never ovulated sometimes your body runs a high level of Lh without ovulating. Call your clinic they must have someone there tomorrow. They can do bw.

  • No monitoring. At the beginning of my cycle when I decided to try the IUI I realized that the day I was due to ovulate was July 4th, they said then we just do it on Saturday. I wasn't happy about the fact that they are closed today, most people I know said their RE office is open every day for this very reason. They also said since I ovulate on my own this is the first step. I'm thinking next month doing the IUI and getting monitored to give myself a better shot.

  • From what I understand you ovulate 24-36 hours after a positive OPK, they said I do ovulate on my own. That's what I think I'd rather wait and monitor next month.

  • Is there any mfi? How much are the IUIs? That would determine for me whether or not I would go in for an iui.

If no mfi then I would probably skip the iui. But then again my IUIs are only $60 so I would probably just do it to be sure.

If you are at a clinic that is letting you take Clomid and is not monitoring you, you need a new clinic ASAP. That is unacceptable. There are far too many risks to play with fire like that.

I'm sorry this isn't going how you hoped, but please, for your health, money, and sanity, find a new RE.

Ummmmm, NO! The risk of multiples is absolutely higher with Clomid. There are ladies (although very rare) who have had life threatening complications from unmonitored Clomid cycles. It is not worth the risk. Period. This makes me seriously doubt this clinic. Please, please get away from wherever you are going right now.

  • Ditto PPs on monitoring. Additionally, Clomid has an unfortunate side effect of thinning the uterine lining in some women. I happen to be one of those patients, so clomid would never have worked for me. I'd never have known I was one of those patients without monitoring.

With that being said, my sister did get pregnant on her second clomid cycle.

No matter what you decide, best of luck!

Oh My!! This just does not sound right!!! They are not monitoring you with Ultrasounds??? How do they know how many follicles you have? How do you know you are even ovulating for sure? You dont just take clomid and then just stick sperms in with IUI! You need make sure if you body is all ready and if it is safe! Of course Clomid gives you a higher chance to have multiples!

I am sorry, but first of all, there should be someone on your RE today no matter what! I am sorry, but I would run as fast as I could from your clinic!!

BTW, I always tested positive on the ovulating kit, but I actually never ovulated. The reason I tested positive was because I had high lh but very low progesterone... AND 60 dollars for IUI????? Where???
  • Well I didn't do the IUI and I'm going to call my RE on Monday morning and express my concerns about monitoring, even though I have before. I am also going to start looking into a new RE, the fact that they were closed on 4th of July is just annoying. The RE I'm using comes very highly recommended so I'm a little taken back by this. I have to say, my mother asked a good friend of hers, who is a well known OBGYN, has been for 40 years didn't find it that troublesome that I'm not being monitored.

I'm not surprised. OBs hand out clomid like candy. Obviously they don't think it's as dangerous as some of us have seen it be.

  • @TJ1979 I'm sure there are OB's that hand it out like candy but I can assure you this OB is not one of them. This is a DOCTOR that has been practicing for over 40 years. I'm sure you have seen horror stories, but you are not a doctor. That comment came across a little nasty.

  • TJ1979 `s comment was not nasty in my opinion. I think it is true! Although many woman did not have any problems with Clomid before, many other ones had too. It is very much you choice how much risk you want to take.

If you are working with a doctor who is so good in a highly recommended clinic, why are you so concerned and annoyed? Just trust they know what they are doing!

I have 50% insurance coverage for IUIs so they only cost us $60. Which is probably why we did so many cycles, but eventually one worked.

  • Still very cheap!!! I am lucky my insurance pays 100% of any IF treatment up to 30K so I didnt have to worry about costs at all. Even Clomid and progesterone for me costed only 10 bucks, but that is because of my insurance too... I know the IUI in my clinic without insurance would be around 650 as they said...
  • It isn't fair to assume ALL OB's give out Clomid like candy. My OB referred me to an RE when I went to him, didn't just give it to me, nor did my RE, they did two months of getting on my DH and I before giving it to me. @Oliv0026 you're right I should trust my doctor not people on a message board.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the one being nasty here. We are trying to help and sharing our experiences. No, I'm not a doctor. But even being monitored on clomid I had a severe reaction that landed me in the hospital. Therefore I am terrified of the drug and strongly advise caution with it's use.
Why are you here if you don't want to hear our advice, experiences, and suggestions?

  • Well I posted this question for positive success stories of people getting pregnant on Clomid. I didn't ask about monitoring. After months of negatives, I thought positive stories on a "success after IF" board would lift my spirits. Instead I got negative opinions. Please I only want to hear positive success stories. I am dealing with IF as I haven't had any success yet.

Sorry, IF has a lot less puppies and rainbows than normal pregnancy boards. We are trying to give you advice so that you can get your success story sooner than later. We aren't trying to bring you down.

If this board has upset you, something like baby center might be more your speed than the bump. SAIF is one if the friendliest boards on the bump. You might really get your feelings hurt if you venture to some of the other boards.

  • I dont think anyone here is trying to hurt your feelings at all, in fact, we are sharing what we learned and our experience with you, that is all. I know you were looking for different answers, I am sorry we didnt have it for you. When I first posted here looking for success stories, I got hurt too because I didnt hear what I wanted to, but now I understand that these women are just trying to share what they learned. Sometimes, when we make IF questions, we should be prepared to hear the positive and negative outcome as this can be a really hard journey. I really wish you good luck in your journey and hope you will get what you want. I understand how frustrating it is to get negative results month after month and I HATE when people say " Oh, it will happen at the right time"...
