Bed Rest Check In

Now that I've landed myself on bed rest, I thought it would be nice to do a check in for those of us trapped at home or in the hospital! Here's my story... Called my nurse this morning after having consistent, minor BHs for a day and a half. I fully expected her to have me come into the office and find out everything was fine. They ended up sending me to L&D because my OB was there. After getting all hooked up they determined my uterus was irritable, probably due to dehydration but the main concern was my sky rocketing BP...which was fine at my Monday appt. At one point, it was 167/111. So they hooked me up to some IV meds and gave me some terbutaline (?) for contractions. Thankfully, my bp came down right away, but I was admitted for 24 hours while they monitor urine for pre eclampsia. So far, everything has come back clear, leading my OB to believe its gestational hypertension. Unfortunately, that still leaves me on bed rest with increased check ins with the OB until LO arrives or they induce. Right now, they are controlling my bp with meds, so that's good. If I don't get protein in my urine, I should be able to keep him cooking a while longer! So much for my July 4th plans! Those of you who've been on bed rest longer...tell us your story, how long you've been on bed rest and how you're keeping your sanity!

Re: Bed Rest Check In

  • Hey there!
I have been on bp meds for 7 weeks, and they kept things in check. In the last week, though, my bp started climbing. At my Wednesday appointment, bp was very high and I had a small amount of protein. I did the 24 hr catch at the hospital, and it is bordererline for mild pre eclampsia. I got steroid shots for baby's lungs. Today I go home. My bp is so much better at the hospital (with rest). If I want to keep cooking baby, I need to take it easy. Not so simple bc I stay at some with my 3 kids, but we are looking for child care. My dad comes to help out in a couple of weeks.

    I'm already bored!

    Sarah, I'm mobile...how many weeks are you? 35? I am 32 weeks, 2 days.

  • Hi hi hello! I'm 33 weeks, 3 days and have been resting it up for the last month! I called my OB after feeling radiating pain in my abdomen on June 5th and was sent to L&D to learn that pain was actually contractions! Spent seven hours on the monitors with contractions between 2-3 minutes! I was diagnosed with irritable uterus, given a cervical scan and sent home only to show up again a few nights later. After a round of terbutaline and another cervical check I had lost 1.5cm in just four days. I was given a round of steroids and have been stuck on the couch since.

My blood pressure is too low for daily Procardia so it's kind of a watch and wait deal. I've had five trips to L&D so far and doc says anymore cervical loss and it's hospital bedrest for me :/

Keeping "busy" with Netflix and homework (my thesis is due in four weeks!). Also some crafting- check out the mobile I made! Good luck ladies- it's a boring road but anything for a fully cooked kid!
  • Love the mobile! Very cool. I wish I were more crafty. Maybe I need to learn to knit...

  • @Lawgrl04‌ I'm 34, 4 but my hospital doesn't like to deliver before 36 weeks, so hopefully my bp will cooperate for a while longer! Glad meds have worked for you for so long!

  • I'll be 34 weeks tomorrow and have been on bedrest since 24 weeks due to a drastically shortened cervix (which has since miraculously grown) and have been on Procardia 4 x a day. 10 weeks ago, we were just hoping to make it to 30 weeks and now that we've hit 34, any additional time seems like cause for celebration. I've watched a lot if Netflix, tins of old Grey's reruns, read about 4 books and washed a ton of old baby clothes. Only 4 more weeks to go at this point, because since baby A is breech I have a c section scheduled for 38w2d. Hang in the here ladies, we will be wishing for times to rest like this once the little ones are here!

  • Oh, no! So sorry to hear you are all on bedrest :( I haven't "officially" joined the club but our 4th plans are out the window as well. Thanks to last night's L&D visit I'm now a bundle of nerves that this kiddo could be here in the next 2 weeks. I'm also experiencing some lower back pain which they told me to look out for so that has me unsettled as well. I had it in my head I had atleast 6 more weeks and have been so calm up until now. I have yet to wash clothes, pack a bag....so much. They told me to lay low and our big Friday night 4th of July date will be another trip to L&D tonight for some more monitoring and shot #2.

I hope you all can enjoy the holiday as much as possible. Atleast we are in it together, hang in there ladies! ;)

  • I am in the exact same situation as you @sarahg8r . My bp is being maintained by the medicine. I have bp checks at the ob twice a week and once a week NST. The doctor told me yesterday if I don't develop any protein they will induce me between 37-38 weeks. I have had steroid shots just in case. Bed rest is so boring! I hope we can all keep our LOs baking!
  • Hi there! I've been on bed rest for 7 weeks due to high bp. It's only been getting worse. Last one was 146/96. Doc is worried about the bottom number reaching 100. I also did a 24 hour test and have protein in my urine. Luckily no headaches or blurred vision so I have been diagnosed with pre-pregnancy induced hypertension. I received the steroid shot last weekend after an overnight hospital stay in case they need to deliver my twins early. Doc is hoping to keep them in for another week or so without my bp getting out of hand. I'm on biweekly appointments with NSTs. Next ultrasound is Monday! I'm 33 weeks today! Been watching a ton of tv and trying to get thru the 700+ pages of The Goldfinch before my girls arrive :)

  • I'm 33 weeks and 2 days, I've been on bed rest since week 23. The first month was in the hospital and the last 6 weeks have been at home. Similar to LilSip0611 they found I had a short cervix at 19 weeks and put me on progesterone. When it shortened further at 23 weeks they admitted me to the hospital. My first goal was to make it to 28 weeks, then 32. So we're psyched to have made it to 33!! Oddly enough, the time in the hospital seemed to go by faster, than at home. I've kept busy watching netflix & starting new TV series, reading, knitting a sweater ( this is the first real article of clothing I've knit so when I messed up I would just take it out and start over- hey, I have the time lol). Hang in there, all in all, laying low and getting rest is a small sacrifice to help ensure our babies are as healthy as they can be. Plus, as others have already mentioned, we'll wish we had this time to rest once our littles ones are here!!!
  • I'm 35 w with twins and was put on bed rest at 28 w due to IU and shortening cervix (below 2.5). Cervix lengthened over next few weeks and I'm approaching 36 w so may even get taken off! I have 19 mo DD in a 2 level house, so it has been hard.

I've watched a lot of tv and read a lot. I have fun looking up recipes, making grocery lists and sending H to the store. Then I use some of my precious allotted vertical time to cook/bake, which makes H happy. The house is... messier than I would normally keep it, but thankfully my mom was down for about a week and deep cleaned the kitchen while entertaining DD.
