Anyone have Transitions (or similar) lenses?

I went to the eye doctor today and my insurance covers transitions lenses. The lady helping me raved about them, but I wasn't sure. I got them thinking that my ins benefit renews in January and I can get new ones if I absolutely hate them.

What are your thoughts on them?

  • They are nice but for me who is light sensitive they don't get dark enough and don't work too well when driving.

I read that they don't work in the car because the auto glass is already UV blocking. They only react to UV light.

  • I love them and my eye doctor recommends that I only get those lenses because of some damage to my eye (I can't remember what they called it). That said, they don't compare to actual sun glasses and the transition is so subtle that often I can't tell it has happened until I look over my glasses, see my reflection, or go inside and suddenly can't see in the dark. So if you are getting them because you need sunglasses, they might not be your best bet but if you just want some protection against eye damage than I would go for it.
  • I've had them and didn't love them because they don't work in the car and I drive a lot. I would recommend an anti-reflective lens instead since it works wonders for night driving.

If you want something for sunny days I also recommend a pair of RX polarized sunglasses.

Full disclosure, I used to work at Lenscrafters as an optician and eye health is a big deal to me. I also know a website where you can get a pair of transition type glasses for wicked cheap if you want to get an idea of how you'll like them. As soon as I get a new RX I'll be getting several pairs off the site because seriously... they're like $15.

  • I just got transitions this year too & I love them! I was hesitant at first too but I'm so glad I did! I never put on sunglass shades anymore, & the transition is so seemless I honestly never notice it changing.
  • DH has had them as long as I've known him, and he loves them. My dad also just got them and says he likes them a lot. Too bad you can't rent a pair and try them out, because the lenses are pretty expensive, I think.

@Ziegeficker‌ it is about $95 extra for the tinting lenses. I would not even consider getting them if they weren't included by my insurance.
