NBR: favorite cleaning supplies

I am moving to a house with wood laminate flooring. What kind of household cleaners and supplies do you use? Right now all I have is a vacuum, windex, bathroom cleaner, and bleach water squirt bottle.

Laminate doesn't require the upkeep that real hardwood does. Sweep the floor regularly to avoid getting scratches and clean with a damp mop. Hot water is fine for the mop, but if you absolutely feel like you need a cleaning agent, the gentler the better.

  • We used to have laminate in our condo and we had one of those shark steam mops. So simple, no mess and compact!

  • I'm a vinegar and water girl, myself. Every once in a while I'll use some Lysol to mop the floors, but vinegar and water is cheap and chemical free.

  • For real hardwood we always used Murphy's Oil diluted in hot water. For laminate a steam mop would be perfect.

  • I have laminate wood floors too and I just sweep and vacuum them.  If they are particularly dirty I use Murphy's Wood Oil Soap (mixed with water as per the directions on bottle) and a rag to clean them.  If you do that just be sure to dry the floors right away with a clean towel because I've heard that water left on laminate can cause damage.

  • I have a swiffer vac because I hate to sweep, but have hardwood floors. I love that thing!

  • I love my Swiffer! They have a version for each type of flooring lol but the wood oils are great for any random scratches/scuffs
Vinegar has my heart tho, using it for basically everything!
  • I love my shark on my laminate floor. Honestly I usually just run the vacuum over it most of the time, the shark comes out for more heavy duty cleaning.

I'm sure it depends on what laminate you get, but ours is fantastically easy to clean. The tile in my kitchen, on the other hand... PITA. It's beautiful but I hate it. Tile- y u look so dirty!
  • I saw there's a vacuum plus steamer mop thing. They're a little expensive though. I'm guessing it's similar to the swifter vac with reusable cleaning pads. Worth it?
  • I have laminate floors and I used to just use a damp cloth to clean them because I was afraid to use any cleaning products.  But that wasn't getting them as clean as I wanted so I bought a microfiber mop and it came with a cleaner.  It's called Libman Multi-Purpose Floor Cleaner. I sweep my floors, vacuum them, and then spray the cleaner on little sections of the floor, mop them, and repeat.  I tried it on a section in the closet first to make sure it didn't ruin the floor.

My mom also uses vinegar and water to clean almost everything so I may try that.

Swiffer Vac + Swiffer mop. Wham, bam, thank you ma'am.
  • I've never had laminate wood floors but I have wood floors and I honestly think you should treat them the same. I rarely ever mop my floors. I just go over mine with a Dyson when it's really dirty, like now, and I use a commercial grade microfiber dust mop the rest of the time. It has two pads that I can change out. 1 I use dry and 1 damp. When I do mop them I use a commercial grade product called damp mop.

My best friend has laminated wood floors and when her husband was sick I always cleaned her floors before she came home from the hospital. Her floors always had a film on them. She used Murphy's oil, mr clean, or that cleaner in the swifter wet jet, it drove me crazy because I'm OCD about floors. I used my damn mop and had to clean them multiple times to get the film off.

I've heard Bona is an awesome floor cleaner that doesn't leave a film but I've never tried it. I recommend us using the least amount of any chemicals as possible.

Shark steam mop!!!  We have laminate in the entire first floor of our house.  I plug that sucker in and about 30 minutes later have all the floors done and the pad looks very gross.  I also have a dry swiffer for inbetween major cleanings to get the dust and dog hair up.
  • I have to repeat the shark steam mop, that thing works like a champ!

  • We have hardwood, not laminate, but got rid of the swiffer because we made a conscious effort to cut down on waste, so buying and tossing out those pads was on our list.

I've been using Method floor cleaner and a microfiber mop. Then just throw the microfiber pad in the laundry. Its WAY less streaky than the swiffer - wish I'd switched earlier!!  And the Method cleaner is natural almond scented, its really pleasant.

  • I saw Sams club had microfiber mops for sale. I think I may start with one of those and some cleaning solution spray of vinegar water. Thanks for all the suggestions!

I have a fill-able mop from the Container Store with washable cleaning pads. I fill it with Simply Floored, which is an all natural floor cleaner which works well on all types of floors (and smells great too)! It's great for pets that refuse to stay off floors before they're dry.
