Trouble TTC

metformin...

Any women here experiencing...shall we say unwanted bathroom problems...from the metformin? How are you handling it?

I don't want to go off the metformin because of some diarrhea but ...come on...this has got to give at some point...

  • Yes. It's awful. So awful that I did quit taking it for a bit. I ended up taking one pill instead of two. I make sure to take it with my dinner (instead of at bedtime like the pharmacist recommended) and sometimes I take a generic pepto bismal pill with it. That seems to help.

  • OOOOOOOOOOOHHHH GIRLLLLL.... LOL The metformin in NO joke when it comes to bathroom trips. I am on 2000mg a day and my frequent bano visits lasted for about 3 weeks. I learned to curve my eating habits and that helps a lot. Less carbs and sugar=less bathroom stops.

  • Yes, you reallllly have to be careful what you eat while on met. My gastro intestinal issues are at peak level when I'm eating carbs and sugar. If I know I won't be near a bathroom for a while I make sure I eat only protein in the morning. I don't care much at night because I'm always home-I take my night pills right before bed with my prenatals.
  • Ok so hopefully with this new diet it stops soon

  • I'm on 2000 a day of met and let me tell you it does really suck with the bathroom visits... Like others have said less carbs and sugar. I seem to be ok when eating whole grain all natural stuff, but it has been a trial and error type of situation. It's a matter of finding what I can and cannot eat, I used to love eating grapes, but now it's a no go on met. Good luck!
  • I am on 1500 mg. It says to take 3 pills at dinner, however, my RE and my pharmacist told me to break it up throughout the day with a meal. So I take one at breakfast, one at lunch and one at dinner. It has helped tremendously. I do notice if I eat and forget to take it, then take it hours later, i get the bathroom woes. So it really helps to have a little something in your tummy.

I am also on the extended release. If you're not, you might want to ask your RE about that one. Its supposedly less harsh on the gastrointestinal system :)

Yes Metformin is really tough, but I was taking Alli for awhile and that was crazy!!! I will say at least metformin knocks before, Alli just busts in....I have noticed that if I take it at night the symptoms are not as bad. So I take one pill in the morning and two before bed. I'm taking 1500mg a day.

I take 1500mg and have for about 3 months. It took a good month to get use to it. I take mine about 30 minutes before bed and then I process it by morning. Good luck!

Are any of you ladies on the extended release?  I'm on the ER version, 1000mg/day, and after the first few weeks, my bathroom woes have mostly subsided.  I take one with some breakfast food (usually at my desk at work), and the other with dinner (taking with food helped me tremendously).  When I first started taking it, they had to slooooowly work me up to 1000 mg.  I started by taking one 500 mg tablet every other day, then after a few weeks taking one tablet every day, and then a few weeks later up to 1000 mg.  I'm not sure if my dr will up my dosage to 1500, but we shall see!

I am. I'm on glumetza? I only had minor issues the first two weeks and have been fine for over 4 months now.

I hope it gets easier for you!

Yes!! Met really sucks!! I've been on it for awhile and it took awhile to even out the stomach issues and now all of a sudden I'm having trouble again! Food selection definitely determines how upset my stomach gets
