My kid is a little shark...

DS is the "biter" at daycare. Its gotten so bad lately its happening once a day. Sometimes its because he frustrated if someone is playing with a toy he wants or sometimes he just does it out of nowhere. He's actually gotten smart about it too, he now waits until his teacher is changing a diaper to strike because he knows she can't get to him as fast. So that makes me think he kind of knows hes doing something hes not supposed to. They do timeouts, redirection, talking to him, etc. I do the same things at home when he bites but NOTHING works. He thinks its funny. I know its just a phase, and kids will be kids, but I just worry about the other kids going home with teeth marks on them! Has anyone tried anything that has worked??

Re: My kid is a little shark...

  • DD bites once in awhile at daycare, and this week she came home with 3 separate incident reports from other kids biting her.  Ahhh the joys of the one year old room.

They often read "Teeth Are Not for Biting," re-direct, and give them a frozen teether to chew on if they think it's associated with sore gums.

I feel bad when she bites too, because I don't want other kids to get hurt.  But when she came home with bite marks on her own arm, I was just like "oh well."  I hope the other parents do the same, because there isn't much we can do but wait for them to learn that it isn't okay...

  • My son started biting out of frustration.. my pediatrician told me to bite him back. Sounded silly but worth a shot. He bit my arm during a tantrum so I picked up his arm and gave him a very light bite. It didn't hurt but I think he was shocked. It worked. He hasn't bitten since.
