Baby shower gift question

I will be attending a baby shower for my cousin in the next month or so. I have really been into making baby blankets and accessories lately (I crochet and knit). I would like to make something for her ds. I was wondering, if someone made something for you as a baby shower gift would you like it? Or would you prefer just something off of your registry?

I would probably make a blanket and then buy a small gift off of her registry.

Re: Baby shower gift question

  • My sister is big into homemade gifts for baby showers. She does a blanket and then will crochet a larger stuffed animal for the monthly baby photos.

  • I think things like blankets and burp cloths, practical things, even the stuffed animals are great. I have no issues with receiving home made ones, and actually prefer them. The only kind of gifts that I really don't like that are 'home made' are things like diaper cakes.

  • I like homemade gifts because it's personal and everytime it is used, it reminds you of the person who made it for you.

I think a baby blanket would be great with a small gift. It is way more personal. Even better if you can personalize it if you know the baby's name.

  • This sounds like a wonderful gift that you put your love into. I think it's a great gift!
  • I am encouraging my friends and family to make me stuff. I'll buy the boring necessities, but I love personal gifts. You can even ask for the colors she wants.

Agree! I got a diaper cake with dd. It took forever to take apart! My favorite gift from my shower was a little rocking chair that a friend's husband made! DD is 7 and we still have it!
  • Pretty much the only things I saved from DD were handmade gifts. My dear grandmother made her a ton of blankets and u still have all of them 10 years later. It is extra special because she past away when DD was 18 months old.

I love diaper cakes! I make them and have never had a complaint. In fact every person I have ever made one for totally swooned over it.

  • I'd love something hand made. My coworker was grilling me the other day on what kind of motif we're looking at for our nursery...trying to get ideas. It'll be interesting to see what she makes!!
  • My SIL is expecting in November and I plan on doing something similar.  This is their first so they need literally everything. I plan on making something homemade and also buying something they need.  I am going to crochet her a set for newborn photos (a matching set of a newborn cacoon and hat seen below) and either some extra hats or a blanket if I have time since I will also be making my own LO a blanket as I have done for all my kids.image

  • I got a gazillion baby blankets at my shower for DD, so I vote no blanket. I would either knit a hat or other item or do something off the registry.

  • @dtremel I have made hats before so I will do just a basic hat with ears in the yellow color.  For the cocoon I haven't decided yet if I will just crochet in a round like a hat or what just yet.  I may try to look for a pattern online and than just  make it fit my needs.

  • I always make a blanket and hat for a gift, and then get something off the registry. I've gotten great feedback from everyone, even when there were other homemade gifts--blankets included--mommies to be tend to love them all because they end up being different weights, sizes and colors to use throughout the year. And I let mommies know, if they have too many, to please donate it to the hospital for a less fortunate baby.

@ladysaceb, that is adorable. I'm hoping to make a minion one for our LO because DH is obsessed.
