Breastfeeding

Same results from pumping

Hi! I was wondering from all you experienced moms out there .. Am I going to get the same effects from pumping full time as I would if I were just breastfeeding? Am I not going to get a period for awhile, burn calories quicker and therefore lose more weight?
I have a preemie and have not been able to breastfed her so I pump and give her breast milk by bottle.

I'm breastfeeding and got my first period when LO was. 5 weeks, so I wouldn't count on that either way. Same thing with weight loss. Your body does need more calories to make milk, but some women seem to lose weight quickly, and others can't lose the weight until they wean.

  • I'm confused. You'd pump to supply your preemie with bm if you benefit from it? That's what I got from your post...

Giving you the benefit of the doubt though. Get a 2nd opinion from an lc if you want to bf. Just because she's preemie doesn't mean she can't nurse.

    This.

While I know LO is getting lots of benefits from BFing, I missed out on the whole no-period/rapid-weight-loss thing!

  • You can't count on either one - no periods or losing weight. I don't think it matters if you're pumping or BFing. I didn't get my first period after DD1 until several months after she stopped nursing. I didn't lose any weight breastfeeding either. I try not to keep track of my weight while BFing because I'd rather eat when hungry to keep my supply up.

  • I'm currently EPing for DD2.  With DD1 I nursed when at home and pumped at work.  I agree with the others about not being able to count on no period and weight loss.  While nursing, I got my period at 6 mpp.  While EPing, I am 3 mpp and no period yet (knock on wood).  I will say that I feel that I am losing weight slower while EPing.  I'm much more aware of my supply while EPing and I think that causes me to eat more to keep my supply up.

@CNYBride05‌ - I am not pumping because of the benefits I could get .. I'm obviously pumping to give my daughter the benefits of breast milk. So please don't think I'm that shallow. I am simply just wondering if my body knows the difference between pumping as EBF.
Secondly, she probably could breastfed by now - and we have tried - by she has a really hard time latching on. She gets really pissed, starts screaming instantly and then forgets to breath .. So we are ok with her getting a bottle of breast milk. However, she was just diagnosed with tongue tie and we are waiting to get into ENT for that.
Maybe once that is resolved she will be better. We still try daily tho.
    Thanks for the info!
