Are you kidding? Now I get to be terrified that Gavin has autism because he loves to sit like this?
Great.
I wouldn't worry because ds1 sat like this and he is fine. I know that when he was sitting like this and I read some articles about w sitting I came across articles that say it is associated with sensory disorders. Obviously not all kids who sit like this have autism.
We'll considering that right now N doesn't sit for more than 30 seconds at a time, I'm not too concerned yet. I did notice my 2.5 year old niece sittin like this today and I told my sister who also hadn't heard it. So she asked her to sit criss cross applesauce (which is the new PC way of saying Indian style apparently).
According to Josh's PT, it isn't the end of the world if they sit like this. It just doesn't make them use their core muscles or rotate and can be a hard habit to break. So if they sit like this sometimes, NBD. It's when they *only* sit like this that it can become an issue. Never heard about any connection to autism.
My husband's cousin's son is autistic and she was the one who told me to watch ds1 because they way he sat could be an indicator of autism. Of course I started to read and came across the articles about w sitting and Autism. Nowadays there is such majority of kids diagnosed with autism, particularly boys, that it is very scary.

My friend's son has autism and never had issues with w sitting. If you research long enough you can probably connect several kinds of issues with several unrelated "signs." Kids sit in the w position because it's easy. The end.
I sat this way all the time as a kid. When I stand my knees turn noticeably inward instead of pointing straight out. I am sure everyone's body freaks with it differently, but I don't let J still like this for very long
Re: "W Sitting" should be discouraged
Ds1 sat like this on occasion and I wS terrified after reading about the autism and w sitting link but he is fine.
