Single Parents

Autism/Asb's

I'm watching 20/20 right now, about the kid who shot up San Fran or something in Cali last month. (No TV when it happened, so IDK). Anyway, the dad said he might have had autism or HF Asb's. First, this has to be scary as hell for parents who have kids with Aut/Asb. Fear that their children might have the same tendencies or fear that others might look at their kids and have fear. SUCKS. I know a mom with an aut child and I now nanny for a HF Asby teen. Mental illness in this country is a joke. It's sick and sad. It should be easier to get help.

It's hard to be a parent. I mean, obv E is only 5 months, but although some parents don't do shit and are hands off and ignore or help along bad behavior, it sucks when parents really try everything to help their kids and the worst happens. Just sucks.

Mental illness just effing sucks a big one.

Re: Autism/Asb's

  • I can't watch shows like that. I'm not strong enough. But mental illness is very scary and very sad.

First, hi lurker @lovelyritametermaid. Never seen you around here before.

Second, I don't claim to be an expert on the above post. I'm saying mental illness in general sucks ass. I happened to be watching a show where a kid that MIGHT HAVE had aut/asb and how it must be awful for parents of aut/asb kids to have their kids lumped in this pool of bad kids. The kid in the show also had bipolar which is a mental illness. I apologize if my post came off sounding like aut/asp was a mental illness.

  • No, I was just stating a fact.  I wasn't really trying to be argumentative.  Sorry, that was kind of, I dunno, a bland response?  lol.

It's a developmental delay with social impairment, communication difficulties, and/or intellectual disabilities.  But not all of the above are always involved.  My daughter is autistic.  She is socially impaired and has lots of difficulty communicating.  We aren't 100% about her intellectual abilities yet.

I agree with you, that it sucks for parents like me because our child is portrayed as a "defect" or someone who may grow up to be unstable.  We get enough of that from anti-vaxxers labeling them as "injured" and "damaged".  It would help if the media would not report on autism as though it has anything to do with someone being a sociopath and going on killing sprees.  Someone who does that is mentally ill whether they have autism or not.

It would also help if the media would report on ways to TREAT mental illness instead of making people afraid of it.  These people who are doing things like this fall through the @cracks and aren't pushed to get treated.
@LovelyRitaMeterMaid‌ a friend of mines little brother is autistic. When we were younger he had a reay hard time using words and math and science were near impossible for him. Hes doing really well now though hell be graduating from college soon with a music major and hopes to be a music teacher.

My sister with asbergers graduated college with a degree in communications minor in journalism. She worked at a vet clinic in oregon for awhile because there were just no.jobs available. Now shes back in minnesota and applying for a job as a receptionist at a newspaper with possibility of advancing to editor.

I am with you, its hard being the family of those on autism spectrum because you watch them struggle and you cant always help.

But your daughter will thrive and do well since she obviously has a mom who loves her
