December 2014 Moms

Registered for daycare

Is anyone else the same boat? We just had to put ourselves down on the waiting list/pay a deposit for daycare for Dec 2015! Even at this point we are not guaranteed but apparently have a very good chance of getting a spot. We live in a very family oriented area so infant spots are in high demand and this one is very good and only a block away from us so we really want to get.

Re: Registered for daycare

  • @LadyThrice‌ I live in Canada so pretty much everyone takes the full year off so all the Dec 2014 moms will be looking for daycare at the same time. We have 6 daycares in the area but only 3 take 12-18 month babies and even then the spots are limited to 10-15 babies.

Man. I thought this post was going to be about putting day care expenses on your registry. That, I can get behind. Ha... In other news, day care is crazy expensive. Peace.

If only that was an option! :) JK

  • we registered for Dec too.  it's better to be first on the wait list then not, that way you're covered :)

  • We lived in NYC with dd and had her on a waiting list for about 2 years. It worked out well because our nanny left when she was 17 mos, and I was working from home until we figured things out. The daycare called us that week to let us know that a spot would open up in a month!! So she started at 18 months which was a great time for her.

  • Just started to look at day care pricing and what is near by.  DH and I are going to have to talk tonight.  Starting to look into the benefits and costs associated with a nanny or nanny-share.

    Test
  • @Meether‌ Nannies around here are $3000 a month (all taxes, etc included, they net around $2200 a month) so it's only really worth it with 2+. We will definitely look into after number two.

  • What's the deal with registering for December? Wouldn't if be Jan/Feb depending on how much leave you're taking?

I visited one today. It's in an older building (and the age shows), the lack of organization of stuff on the walls was giving me anxiety, the playground is ridiculous and on asphalt and the price was horrifying.

@twolittledogs‌ this is for Dec 2015 as I have a one year mat leave.

  • I never open these posts bc we don't need "day care". But I did today and it reminds me to being VERY thankful to my mom and MIL. Both live within 15 mins of us, mil is retired so babysits at our house 2-3 days and my mom 1 day. I wish everyone could have family so close to them and available to help. It stops us from moving....and our place is getting way too small but the cost if a bigger place plus possibly losing our child care grandmas keeps us where we are.

  • I called (2) places to me and they both were like... "You're so early!! Call us around September/October/November." You had me worried! :)

At least you know now though, guess my area is just shorter on spaces.

  • I feel for all the parents who have daycare anxiety and expenses. More props to you because I dont know how you do it. My SO and I work opposite schedules. I work 35 hours a week during the day and he works late evenings/early nights. So one of us is home at all times. Weve had this schedule since I was pregnant with our DS and still do. We dont get much couple time but it works otherwise. I would go nuts i think if I had to worry about daycare! :(
  • I was all set to look at daycares this summer and then I got a new job where I will be working from home, so no day care needed YET. I'm hoping my mom will want to take care of bambino for a few hours a day to let me work when (s)he is old enough to cause trouble. My house will be flexible enough that I can work slightly less during H's work hours as well.

  • We are in Canada as well and I have the full year of mat leave, plus they top up my Employment Insurance to almost my full salary for about 3 months.  Very lucky.  I will be going back to work in January of 2016, and I added myself to the waiting lists for day cares in our area.  They are building one at the end of our street, beside our child's future elementary school and really hoping we can get in there.  They only have 8 infant spots, but otherwise there are a number of home day cares.  It feels so far away, but I'm sure it will come up fast.  It is incredibly difficult to find day care spots here.

I called a couple places and they can't guarantee a spot right now. But they said in the fall alot of openings turn up because the babies go into another area. Most around my area take 6 infants.
