Pregnant after a Loss

Can we talk about internal ultrasounds?

Is anyone else scared of them, or am I just crazy? I know a million people get them done all the time and it's fine.... but for me, I had one done with the last pregnancy, and lost the baby just a couple days after. And then proceeded to not know for 4 weeks until I went back to the doc and there was no heartbeat and I ended up with a D&C. I'm not saying the internal caused me to m/c, but I don't think I want one this time. My doc has me slated for a 6 week and 9 week ultrasound- am I crazy for wanting to skip the 6 week and just do the external at 9 weeks?

It's not going to change anything that's going on in there one way or another... and I feel like after the health of the baby and myself, my peace of mind is priority one right now. And although I'd love the reassurance that everything's okay in there, I think I'd be a total wreck afterwards until I could get checked again you know?

Long story short: I hate my brain sometimes.

Re: Can we talk about internal ultrasounds?

  • Your story sounds very similar to mine. With my last pregnancy, I had a TV ultrasound at 8wks and lost my symptoms, and the baby, a couple of days later. I also didn't find out until my 12wk appt. This time around, I had another TV u/s at 7 wks 2 days. I was paranoid just like you, but everything was fine and I did not lose the baby. I am 10 wks 2 days today and all is still well - symptoms in full swing. Like I said, I was nervous, but the need to see my baby and make sure everything was okay overcame that fear. You're experiencing fear by association. Just like when you happen to get sick after eating a certain food, you steer clear of that food for a while. The two were unrelated. Plenty of miscarriages happen without TV ultrasounds and plenty of healthy babies are born after having a TV u/s. I would not hesitate to get that chance to see your baby, if I were you. However, it's totally up to you! The choice is yours, mama! :)

  • I think PgAL brain makes everything scary. I hate any u/s, but only because I fear what it may reveal. I would definitely discuss your fears with your doctor. A lot of times they think they are help to ease your fears by doing early/multiple u/s.

  • I had an external u/s at 7 weeks 2 days which was perfectly clear. Maybe they can push it back a small amount so doing it externally will be fine?

  • With my last pregnancy I had my 1st internal u/s at 7 weeks and started spotting right after. I ended up spotting through 12 weeks and found out i had a MMC at my 12 week appointment. I know that the internal u/s prob had nothing to do with my MMC but i was just petrified to get one during this pregnany. I expressed this concern to my ultrasound tech and she started with the external and got  everything she needed from that both at 7 1/2 weeks and 9 1/2 weeks. I would def ask if they will try and external and see if they can get everything that they need from that.

  • During my last pregnancy, I miscarried two days after my internal u/s so I felt similar to you. The thought of seeing our babies won me over at 5w6d and we did an internal this time. I just had a second internal at 8w4d and so far so good.
Like pp have said, it is all about what makes you comfortable! Good luck no matter what you decide!

  • The tvus never bothered me and I like seeing what's up in there even if it eventually doesn't work out. There is no risk to the baby but I totally get where you are coming from. Bad associations are not helping the pgal brain :)

  • Maybe this will make you feel better... I would probably NOT be pregnant without them. I had many to track my ovulation for my IUI.
