Late day naps

Anyone else struggle with late day naps? DS takes 4 a day. Usually nap 1 45 mins, naps 2 about 2 hrs ending at 1. Nap 3 around 2:30-3 for 35-45 min and Nap 4 only about 20 mins ending around 5. He's usually screaming by 6 right when I'm trying to get dinner for 19 mo DD. I try to hold him off until 7 for bed. Should I be putting him to bed earlier since his last 2 naps of the day suck? He seriously loses his shit every night right when DH gets home and I'm trying to get dinner. Not sure what to do. I wish he'd go to bed later since MOTN is up around midnight and 4. Not much sleep time for me :-(

Re: Late day naps

  • DD is a beast starting about 5 also. Doesn't matter how much she slept during the day.

  • Midnight and 4 are our MOTN feedings too....normal...

  • That's usually our roughest time of day also. If you do decide to put him down early, maybe try a dreamfeed around 10. That may eliminate the 12:00 feeding.
  • Most days, E takes a nap between 5 and 6 for about an hour, otherwise she is a total disaster.

We get a nap between 5:45 and 6 that lasts for 45 mins. If he's overtired for the bedtime routine our lives are hell.

This. The baby is a bear when he's tired. One evening this week he slept from 6-9pm then woke up at 9pm to eat and he went right back to sleep. He slept until 3am and the went back to sleep until 6 after a feeding.

I let him sleep whenever and never try to keep him awake. I'm FTM so I may be screwing him up so that my life isn't hell but it works for us right now.
  • The later in the day, the shorter/harder/less predictable the naps are. I feel ya! I'm trying to aim for an 8-8:30ish bedtime this week.

Same here, we've been doing 9:00 bedtime since he started STTN around 5 weeks, but now he's not taking a late afternoon nap so well anymore and is showing his tired signs earlier. So we're pushing it up to around 8, and he still seems to sleep until about 6 am.

  • The only place DD will sleep late in the day is in her swing, swaddled, or on me in a carrier. If I can do one of those things with her she will take one good nap at the end of the day. If not the evening is shot.
