Trouble TTC

Femvue/SHG

Hey all, I just had my Femvue/SHG this morning. I reviously searched for topics on this type of test on here, but couldn't find any. A Femvue is different from an HSG in that they use a saline/water based fluid rather than dye. Wanted to start a thread in case other ladies are looking for info.

Here was my experience: Doc started by cleaning my cervix with iodine (slightly uncomfortable, sort of like a Pap), he then inserted the catheter into my uterus (this was more uncomfortable, very crampy), and the ultrasound instrument. They then fill the uterus with water (there was some pressure here and more cramping). Next they insert air bubbles into the uterus, and watch them travel up through your tubes on the ultrasound (this part was significantly less cramps than just the water). Doc moved very quickly, but DH and I were able to see the bubbles travel up both of my tubes (both clear! :)). And that's it! Then, ultrasound comes out, then catheter, and then some water also came out. They gave me a heating pad for the cramps, but they went away almost instantly when the catheter was removed. I laid there for about 5-10 minutes after because they said that the saline can cause loss of blood flow and if you sit up too quickly you can pass out or vomit. Yikes! Luckily, neither happened to me. I brought a painty liner and got dressed, and I was on my way!

Overall, it wasn't a pleasant experience, but it wasn't completely awful either. it was done in under 10 minutes, which was great! The most uncomfortable feeling was not being able to "react" to the cramps. I just wanted to pull my knees to my chest! But, obviously i couldn't. loll

If anyone has any additional questions, feel free to send me a PM. Good luck!

Re: Femvue/SHG

  • That sounds very interesting, thanks for sharing! I think I have a traditional HSG when I go next week. is there a reason they do this instead? I'm just curious! Glad your results came back positive!

  • @catlover790 I think they're cheaper since they use ultrasound equipment to see if your tubes are open rather than an X-Ray (HSG). I don't think they're as widely available, though.

Just in case anyone is interested in FemVue instead of an HSG, check with your insurance company before you ask your RE.  My insurance specifically excludes it as it's classified as "investigational" (so is AMH level, so take that with a grain of salt).  I've had FemVue and an HSG, and FemVue was far more comfortable, but I don't want anyone to end up being charged full price for it.    :D
