Formula feeding gurus--please come in!

Situation: I usually BF, but today I am going to be gone until late at work and I only have 12 ounces of BM, so I broke out a sample can of formula to make a four ounce bottle, just in case he wants another few ounces before I get home this evening.

So, I followed the instructions on the can and mixed it up, and as I was putting it into the refrigerator; I smelled it--and it smelled spoiled or just "off." (Definitely not like regular milk--but not like spoiled milk either. I can't really describe, maybe kinda metallic-y?) So, I opened the other sample can i had in my pantry and mixed a bottle from that one, and it smelled similarly. Neither one has expired, but they were both sent by Enfamil at the same time.

What is formula supposed to smell like? Do you think I got a bad batch or that it has gone bad somehow? Should I go buy another can?

    Yeah, in general formula doesn't smell great. I switched from Enfamil to the generic brands, though, and they actually smell much better.

    Yeah, formula smells metallic-y because of the added iron. Gross, right?
    Just be aware that he might refuse to drink it. Not because of the smell but in general. Have more solids on hand for whoever is watching him :)

    It does smell pretty bad, tastes bitter too, we still add in an ounce of BM.

    Formula smells horrible! I have had 3 different kinds of Enfamil since DS was born and none of it smells pleasant for sure. I wouldn't worry about it.

    Thank you all--it is Enfamil gentle in a white can. I don't know if he will need it or not, but I just wanted to make sure he would have it if he was hungry before I got home. I will also tell our babysitter that if he doesn't seem to like it, she can give him more solids as well.

    Thanks again! You saved a rush trip to the store at 6 AM and now I can get to work on time!

    When I first started using formula I had no idea that a can expires after a month of being opened until a friend told me. If you use formula very sparingly, enfamil has these 4 oz to go packets that are great. I keep them in the diaper bag now for emergencies. Should you have the occasion in the future to supplement again and are out of samples.

    Yeah im nose blind to it now but formula is a disgusting smell. Formula spit is horrible. Finding a formula spit up on your shirt 8hrs after the fact... I feel unclean...

    I pumped and supplemented with DD1 and formula smells horrible. I found enfamil to be the worst smelling, at least to me. We never premade bottles with formula because she would only drink it fresh. Luckily she was okay with room temp bottles, so we just measured water in the bottles or bought a gallon of baby water(99cents) and mixed it on the spot.

    The Enfamil Gentlease smelled AWFUL...I would have to turn the other way when DS burped...the Target version of it smells much better to me!
