Nursing tops

Ok ladies, this isn't my first time nursing, but I really held back on getting nursing tops last time around and I'm thinking they'd make sense this time around. So, for those of you that have been through this rodeo before, what are your favorite tops or brands for tops? Also, explain the nursing tanks to me. Do you wear them instead of a nursing bra? Does that mean you're basically wearing 2 layers (tank and then whatever top you're wearing for the day)? That seems awfully hot for summertime in the south.

Re: Nursing tops

  • I wear just a nursing tank at home. I may wear a shirt with a nursing bra underneath sometimes, and sometimes wear 2 shirts. It was nice nursing during the winter with sweaters over the nursing tanks.

  • This one in all of the colors! I'm in love with it. I'm pretty small uptop though. I hear if you are larger they don't work as well.
I would wear just that top daily. It has the support already built in.

I bought a couple of these. I don't have an outside baby yet but I wore one to bed, pretty comfy really! I'm smaller up top too so the support was/will be enough for me.
  • I'm larger and yes, the target ones aren't as comfy and ride up. I really like the rouched ones from motherhood maternity. I wear them all the time now, as they're the only ones that still cover my belly. And they're more forgiving while you're still losing baby weight.

I use the nursing tanks for around the house and then if I go out I'll wear them under a button up shirt.  DH bought me some "hippie" tops that are great because they are gauze-like and I wear those over the tanks as well.  Really I hate spending the money that the specialty tops cost but they really are worth it because you don't expose your whole stomach by pulling your shirt up to nurse.  It's already running high 90's here but I haven't been miserable yet with the light layering.  I did buy a size up though because I do not like to feel restricted.  I usually do not wear a bra under them.  The support is good and I just put the breast pads in the tank.  HTH

  • I wear mostly maternity tanks right now, but most of me clothes require some type of layer so it works really well. I bought a few little bandeau bras that I can easily get my boob out of for nursing. I wanted to see how mursing went and what size my boobs evened out to before I went with any normal nursing bras.

  • I've been scoping out normal clothes that look easy to nurse in and aren't clingy in the belly area. I have found a couple of cute button-up shirts, and then this week at Kohl's, I found some neat sleeveless tops and dresses with zippers in the front for $25 each.

  • I hated belly bands until I used them for nursing. I have a black one and a white one and wear them with a nursing bra, then wear regular lightweight summer tops over. The bands give coverage on bottom so you don't have to worry about your shirt's neckline and it's forgiving, so you can put just about any shirt on top of it.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I really don't like nursing tanks. A good nursing bra and tops from Motherhood or Milk worked best for me.

ETA - I'm larger on top, so I found most tanks really uncomfortable and not supportive enough. Also, they took forever to dry if I leaked and showed the leaks. With a separate bra, the whole leaking issue usually only impacted the bra and not my outer layer.

I've gotten one nursing tank from target and I really like it. If I grow a lot more I may need to size up, but I wanted something for starters. FWIW I am short, 5'1, and curvy so I am super picky because it is a fine art to flatter my figure. I also got a nursing bra from target that is sports bra style but really supportive and soft. The only issue I have is that it's full coverage and shows under most of my summer tanks/dresses. I plan on getting things gradually after baby comes once I see what happens to my body. X_X
    This is super smart :)

  • For those of you who either a) feel like you need the support of a nursing bra or b) don't like the price of nursing tanks, it's super easy to make them yourself. Many stores sell plain camis for under $5 and here is a tutorial on how to turn them into nursing tops.

Um, genius. I've bought like 2 nursing tanks. But have a million different colored plain tanks and will be putting them to good use. Now DH will be happy too that we're "saving money" and I'll focus on some good nursing bras. Thanks @mrscurlygurl‌
  • I loved the Medela nursing tanks so much, I now have 4 and live in them at home. So much easier than two layers, plus they are thick and have a bit of spandex in them so they are very flattering in the tummy area. BRU keeps having BOGO 40% off of them.

  • Because I am super busty, a nursing tank is not supportive enough for me outside of the house. I do use them for sleeping or a sleep bra. I use a nursing bra and one of the undercover mama camis under a shirt for outside the house. I have contemplated turning some of my other tanks into undercover mama type tanks, but have just pulled them down so far.
  • So tanks seem to be pretty popular, and sure, at home, nbd, but again, when you go out does that mean you're wearing 2 layers? I feel hot just thinking about that.

Yes , it means two layers. I'm super self-conscious of my belly though, all the time, so I have grown used to the comfort layer to hold the belly in. I don't find it makes me more hot than usual.

This. I also live somewhere that it gets to be 85 on a hot day. I may feel differently when I go to my parent's house where it's 106 today.

  • I always just do a nursing cami or tank under a normal shirt. I never bought a specific nursing top last time and don't plan to this time. The cami allows for you to pull up the outer layer while not flashing your belly to the world. I found it was the most discrete way to nurse since DS hated the cover.

I love this tutorial and I will be doing this to a few of my normal camis.
