How are FTM supposed to know if it's real?!

This is so frustrating! I have been having BH for weeks and some mild cramping for the last week. Today I had my cervix checked again and immediately began bleeding when she finished, again. Much more blood than last time and she had to cauterize it again but this time it took FOREVER because it was bleeding so much. After the appointment I was having cramps that felt like bad period cramps just like last time but this time they have been getting worse and worse. They hurt so bad I'm practically screaming but I can't even tell if I'm actually contracting or just cramping. I called L&D and they told me to wait. Why can't my water just break so I can tell if it's real or not? I hate this unknown shit and I don't know what to do.

Re: How are FTM supposed to know if it's real?!

  • unfortunately cramps after a cervical check are very very normal.  The question is are they time able.  if they aren't just take some tylenol, drink water and relax or call your doctor.  i had BH for weeks as a FTM and I can promise you there is a significant difference between a BH and an actual contraction.  Hope you get some relief.

  • As irritating as it sounds, you'll just know. Hang in there. And ditto PP about refusing any more cervical checks.

  • I wonder when I would have ended up going in had my water not broken. I was convinced/annoyed that I was experiencing "false labor" X_X
  • Looks like I'll be induced next week since big big baby seems to want to stay put. My doctor said my homework for the week was to go home and go into labor, but unless my water breaks I will have no clue. Some mild and sporadic cramping but other than that it's just another day. Everyone says I'll just know when it happens, well we shall see.. Good luck to us all!
  • I'm in the same boat. I've been having contractions for weeks, but with my last labor, I never had a contraction on my own. DH is worried he'll end up delivering the baby. I had some major cramping last week, but it was hard to tell when it would start getting stronger/and then fade. My doula said if they're not timeable, try to relax until they are.

You'll just know like we did when we were on our first. Don't worry, though I've had one, I still question everything. It's all part of the fun!

  • I've been wondering, too.  Last night I had some really wicked pains in my pelvis, but at the same time I really, really needed to go BM.  After I went BM, all the pains were gone.  I told my OB and she said it could have been contractions along with the BM.  Awesome job, body.  Way to totally confuse a newbie.

And now today my pelvis is a little achy, but nothing stop-me-in-my-tracks hurty like last night.  I declined the cervical check this morning, so it can't be from that for me.

  • I wonder the same thing. I just don't want to be at work and unable to drive home if I realize I'm in real labor.
Ditto.  I also don't want my boss to drive me the 45 min home or have to take a cab and come back to deal with my car later.  I'm really hoping to avoid that situation all together.

  • It makes me really nervous hearing about all of the birth stories with people barely making it to the hospital or having their child in the car, even though they thought they were leaving at the right time. Our hospital is 35 min away & I definitely don't want to be cutting it close! :(

this...even as a stm I question things. if they go when you move/change position, become less frequent with water or rest, then it's nothing. But you'll likely know, even if your water doesn't break. It's almost like nothing you've felt before, and you can't do anything but recognize what's going on- you'll probably lose track of time when one happens, you won't really want to move (or talk or anything). Then wait until those are close together before going to L&D. Or call doc/go to L&D if you think it's it, they'll just send you home if it's not.

  • Bah. I've had painless contractions every 6 minutes for the last 2 hours. Feels like Braxton Hicks, but nothing in stopping them. I guess I'll just wait for something to progress or stop!
