Exhaustion

Like serious exhaustion.  I am down to being able to run one errand a day and this week, I found myself food shopping and halfway through (a not very big shopping trip) the store, I got teary and so exhausted I needed to sit down.  I'm just 24 weeks.  Feeling a bit overwhelmed at not even being close.

Does the exhaustion ease at all? Any words of wisdom?  It doesn't help I'm turning 40 this year, pregnant with twins.  So, I know age plays a role but hoping for some encouragement.  Of course, it won't be easy but I'm feeling non-functional and not even in 3rd trimester.  I'm so grateful I don't financially have to work now and just drive kids to camp/school and pretty much rest the rest of the day.

Re: Exhaustion

  • I'm almost there... 36w5d. I've had waves of exhaustion followed by periods of relief throughout almost the whole pregnancy.

I feel you on the one errand a day thing. I've had that on and off, too, and the last couple weeks, it's remained. I don't think that's going to change for me now, but I'm close. I've told DH he has to do the grocery shopping from here on out. It's just become too much pushing everything through the store. When you really think of how much weight you end up pushing through the grocery store and how much you end up walking, it is a lot for the body to handle. The last time I went grocery shopping was 2 weeks ago, and I came home and collapsed on the couch for the next 2 days. Oops. I say know your limits and listen to your body. Rest when you need to, and take advantage of the times that you feel better, but be careful not to overdo it. Hang in there! You can do it!

  • I feel the same way. I shop online for food but can't even put food away. I'm out of breath. I'm 42 and 27 weeks. I needed to do the rest of shopping for the nursery but I couldn't see myself going through store so I shopped online. I would have loved to have gone to the store bc it's baby things but reality is true exhaustion.
  • I'm only 18 weeks and yesterday went home early from running errands because I was just done! To my credit (way to pat myself on the back), I had done some gardening and stuff earlier in the day. I have days where I can do it all, and days where I can't do anything. I hope the former outweigh the later for a while yet.

Sounds about right. Hang in there. It's time to give up errands and let DH take care of the necessities :) I did a huge Costco shopping trip at 24w (with help) and stocked up on everything I could so I wouldnt need much until after the birth. It was great. I also used the electric wheelchairs (jazzy) when I had to go to Walmart a few times in the 3rd tri. Totally worth it.

  • It's normal!  Listen to your bodies!  I carried my twins (now 4) to 38w2d.  Sit down and take those rests.  Have someone else do your shopping or have it delivered.  It's so hard because we all have responsibilities and so much to get done.  But, 24 weeks is far into a twin pregnancy and you are measuring way ahead of a singleton pregnancy.

Thanks for all the encouragement!  I have had an increase in stamina last day or two.  My wife works and picks up kids from camp and I want them home as quickly as possible so helping out with some errands helps us all but I'm definitely decreasing how many (and becoming a more efficient shopper!)

24 weeks now and saw babies this week.  They're doing beautifully <3.  One head down (STAY that way!) and other breech and we found out placenta previa is gone (it caused lots of bleeding earlier, scary).

  • I am 25 weeks and am constantly tired and achy. Having a 2 year old does not help the situation. I had to explain to my husband two nights ago why I couldn't go to the grocery store with her anymore and he seemed so clueless as to why it would be difficult. Ugh.
  • I agree with the PP about it coming and going in waves. I have felt pretty tired and achy since early on, but there are definitely cycles. I'll have a few really terrible days followed by some relief and a little extra energy. Not a ton of energy, but enough to get a few things done. I'm almost 36 weeks now and even though I'm pretty miserable all the time, I still find myself having a good days and bad days. Good luck!

There was a point where I had to limit my activity to one errand a day. Anything more and I was on the couch in pain the rest of the day and night. It was really frustrating, especially trying to explain it to people who had never experienced a multiple pregnancy. But at the encouragement of the ladies here, I had to listen to my body and not worry about what other people think!

A multiple pregnancy is no joke, it doesn't matter how far along you are. Take care of yourself!

  • I'm 25 weeks and I've only been able to do one errand or thing a day for awhile. Some days I'm more exhausted than others. It seems week 24 was worse than this week. I guess it just comes in waves. But I definitely feel ya!
  • My doctor puts all twin moms on modified bedrest from 24-28 weeks and it couldn't have come at a better time as I was feeling exhausted and unable to run multiple errands at 22 weeks. I went to the zoo at 22 weeks and had to rent a motorized scooter. It was mainly a feeling of gravity pulling my belly down that got me. With my DD, I was still very mobile all the way until the end...twin pregnancy is no joke!!! One thing that has helped get through errands or even just doing chores around the house is a maternity support belt. I got one at Motherhood Maternity. They had 3 different kinds and I only liked one so I recommend trying them on before picking one.

  • Oh man... I'm only 9 weeks in and have been exhausted since I found out about the pregnancy. I'm 29, 2nd pregnancy and was not expecting the twins news. I have determined that the 2 little cuties inside definitely take all of my energy. Luckily I'm out for summer break but will go back to teaching in August. I'm just praying that I get a 2nd wind that will last until they come:)
