1st Trimester

When to make the call?

Excited to finally get my BFP yesterday! I was suprised because af isn't due for a few days...I was having a particularly grumpy day so thought I would just see. Anyway when should I call my ob? Will they do bloodwork before I've actually missed my period? Or should I wait and call after I've officially missed it? This is my second pregnancy and can't remember what I did last time :) thx

After I got my BFP I called and got an appointment for 6 weeks. All they did was a regular gyno exam and I peed in a cup. After then I went every 4 weeks.

When you call, mention the hypothyroidism and see what they say. Serial HCG tests (betas) should only be run if necessary, such as if you have a threatened miscarriage or other viability concerns, not to confirm pregnancy. Confirmation is usually done with a pee stick.

I called the day I got my BFP (around 5 weeks), and was given an appointment when I would be 7 weeks...At that appointment I got blood work done and an ultrasound.
  • Like PP said call your endocrinologist and let them know and ask what they recommend.  My OB didn't see me until I was 8 weeks along, they usually see patients between 8-10 weeks.

  • My doc wouldn't even see me until I was 8 weeks. They can't really do/see much until that point. I was surprised because I had always thought as soon as you got BFP you had to go see a doc, but it doesn't seem it's that way at all.

I know some women who have had previous issues will get in as soon as they get BFP, but if there is no history of a problem, I don't think they will schedule you any sooner than at LEAST 6 weeks.

I got my BFP at 4w exactly, called a couple of days later, and they scheduled my first appointment for a few days later at 4.5w. All I did was pee in a cup to confirm the pregnancy and had standard lab work done (standard stuff to test for STDs, find out blood type, immunities, etc). That appointment was with a NP. All of my other appointments have been with the OB, who I first saw at 8.5w, and that appointment included a dating u/s.

  • Both times I called the day after my positive test. With this second one, when I called I was so mesmerized by the information given on the hold recording, that when the scheduler answered the phone I was flustered and could barely tell her why I called! I said something like "pregnancy test, positive, schedule..." LOL
