Let's talk about my placenta (XP)

I may XP this thread to get more opinions, just FYI!

I was very set on having my placenta encapsulated into pills, however, I'm finding it difficult to connect with the few doulas around here that do it, and it cost at least $200, which I just don't think we're gonna have in the next couple weeks.

Although I'm squirmy thinking about taking it home and putting it in a smoothie, that's free for me to do, and I want ALL THE PLACENTA BENEFITS.

Plus, it sounds like a story I can use forever to gross people out with.

Does anyone have any wisdom on doing this? Recipes? Storage? How to transport? Can I just taxidermy it and hang it from the mantle like a prized bass?

  • I hope it works out for you guys, but it's not my thing.

  • I'm not sure about how to transport it or keep it sterile (dry ice?), but i do know that my best friend's doula froze it into ice cubes for them so that it wasn't as gross to pop it in a smoothie over the course of a few days.

Is this something that is on YouTube? Can you use a similar method as one used to transport organs? That's probably something that your doctor can advise you on pretty easily...

  • Have you thought about having a tincture made? It has all the same benefits without the huge cost.

I know you still have to transport it home from the hospital on your own even if you plan on encapsulating it. The doula that taught our birthing class recommended just having a standard cooler with as much ice as you could fit in there.
Sorry - that's what I meant...As in your doctor can probably tell you how they transport organs in a cooler so you can do it yourself...I was just trying to think of places/people where she could get reliable information...but I didn't quite make that clear! :)

  • I haven't XP'd it yet, I wasn't sure where to put it!

I read a few online articles, so it seems placing it in a Tupperware, then into a cooler filled with ice, and you just take it home?

But that it needs to be refridgerated really soon after that, I can't keep refilling a cooler with ice at the hospital, that seems like a PITA...

It tickes me off I've reached out to two doulas who do the encapsulation and no one will be get back to me on it.

I could just redo my budget and pay some bills at the end of this month in order to have placenta money, I'd just rather not mess my bill schedule around right before maternity leave.

    @lhalliburton - what is a tincture??

  • Oh, I Googled tincture, I'm not sure that's done around here, I'll have to investigate it!

  • From what I understand, its extract of the placenta in grain alcohol. You can take a few drops a day, and it never goes bad.

  • @tealowl Could your SO take it home and get it in the refrigerator for you within the first day so you don't have to worry about keeping it on ice? Alternatively, my hospital had an ice and water machine since they really want you to stay hydrated on recovery, so keeping the cooler filled with ice wouldn't have been too difficult.
  • I'm planning on asking him to do that for me, I don't see why he wouldn't. That would it would get home that day and be in the fridge when I get back.

Not sure if this applies at all, but my state requires you to get a court order to keep the placenta. I don't know all the details, but it might be worth asking your midwife/OB about in advance.

    A court order?! Good grief!

We just have to sign a form that we took it home, so that's no biggie!

  • While this is 100% not my thing...

At the newborn care class, this question came up (sorta, was a little diff but I learned stuff from it.)  I learned that in my state/county/hospital (not sure how the laws and whatnot work) that placentas are considered an organ and can ONLY be transported out of the hospital by someone who's had medical training in organ transportation.

Is there someone at your hospital's L&D you can ask?  It would be sad for you to make plans and then have them shot down post-baby.

I had a hard time getting a hold of one too! One will be OOT for several weeks, the one I used last time and the cheapest ($75) never responded after several weeks. I finally found one that I had to call and email to get ahold of. This one is $120. I would think they maybe willing to lower there rate or at least give you advice on what to do. I would try reaching out again. Best of luck. I think it was really worthwhile.

  • Definitely not my thing...

But I thought all they did was take it home fry it up like liver, and then cut it into strips and dehydrate it? Then you smash it up and throw it into some capsules... I could be wrong... But that was my impression on how the process works. Personally I don't think I'll ever be one to get over the gag factor and do it even though I believe it's very beneficial.
  • Do you have a cloth diaper/natural kids boutique near you?? We have a Nicki's Diapers and they have a bunch of classes on different topics - placenta encapsulation being one of them. Maybe a store like that could get you into contact with someone who could help you out.
  • Good for you! I'm not sure I could do that, but I like the concept.
We have had to travel keeping food cold via ice machines in hotels, and it was a huge pita. I can't imagine having to keep that on my mind while in the hosp...though I had to recover form a CS too ( not allowed to walk around right away).  Def. get your SO to transport it home.

Personally, I'd freeze, because I do best with that stuff.  However, freezing things can mess with nutrients/proteins, like cooking them would, if that matters.

Heh, you could buys capsules and stuff them yourself;)

  • It's so frustrating to not be able to get in touch with people! That sucks. There are so many websites dedicated to different ways you can consume the placenta. I agree that smoothies would be a good way to go if you need to do it yourself. I would take a cooler with you and keep it on ice, or you could get some dry ice when you know you are in labor, then you wouldn't have to worry about it at all.

You can give it a mild freeze at home and then cut it into chunks or put it in ice cube trays.

I'm paying quite a bit for my placenta services ($250, I think) but that includes tincture, salve, smoothie cubes, encapsulation, cord keepsake. I'm not great at taking pills, so I wanted options!
