Nails and other Beauty Products

So I'm sure I'm not the only one who needs their nails painted and skin care routines. I've read that only certain nail lines like zoya and butter London are really okay. There goes my 452 bottles of essie. Do you still use normal polishes? I don't know if I'm being hyper vigilant. I just bought a butter color for 15 bones and feel a bit ripped off.

  • I hardly ever paint my finger nails, but I paint my toe nails quite often. I dont plan to change brands, and I dont think the nail salons are using approved brands. I wouldnt stress too much over nail polish.

  • Thanks ladies I figured this may be something written about to just make a news story. And @powerofbacon I was trying to google no chips earlier to no avail. I have the red carpet mani set but always got it on my skin and it peeled off.

Do you ladies change moisturizer or anything like that?
  • Agreed! @holachicaaa the sales lady picked up a top coat base coat set and was like this is great you should try it. I already had said I don't think polish should be 15 and this set was $40.
  • I got manicures and pedicures throughout pregnancies. I know they were careful about pressure points when massaging my feet though. Perfectly healthy baby boy :)
  • I just used a bottle of nail polish, appropriately named "Nail Polish."  As in, I'm pretty sure that's the brand.  I don't know where it came from.

  • The ONLY thing my OB told me was to wait to have my hair colored until after the first trimester! I nearly fell out of the stirrups thinking about my gray hair-- other than that I am indulging in my regular manis and pedis and using my regular face wash.

I will say I am a bit disappointed in the bump for marketing certain products as "safe to use during pregnancy." These claims are NOT based on research and irritate me that it is more of a marketing ploy for us to buy products.

  • Now OB's are telling people to wait to get their hair colored? I thought that was an old debunked myth.  I'm getting a mani/pedi this weekend and my hair colored in a few weeks.

I was also shocked, I really didn't think it was a thing... Guess my gray hairs are here for the next 2.5 weeks...

My doctor told me that getting my hair colored was totally fine. He actually laughed and told me not to do it in a closet or car because of the fumes but other than that it's fine. He did warn me that hormones can change how your hair reacts to color.

I got Mani/pedi and colored it when I was pregnant with DD. I also cut and colored my hair when I got this BFP because I told DH I would. He is not part of the short hair love club.

  • My OB told me he doesn't care if I get my hair colored or nails done. :)
  • I'm glad to see all these responses, because I am a big fan of my beauty products and I'm really particular about what I use. I saw some things about changing moisturizers and I was horrified because it took me forever to find some good face products that didn't cause irritation! I also dye my hair and was concerned about that (though I'm thinking of going natural anyways).
  • I got a mani/pedi last weekend....didn't think much about it...
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • The only reason to wait to do your hair is because the hormones might affect the color. There is no danger to the baby. Otherwise, how would hairdressers be able to keep their jobs while pregnant?
  • I've been gettin gel manicures and plan to continue - such a nice treat! So long as the salon is well ventilated (and the smell doesn't nauseate you), you should be fine.

I've been eatin organically and unprocessed for a few months now, so with baby on the way, it seemed the perfect time to change up my beauty routine. I've switched to Juice Beauty's line of facial care products and am using the Badger brand of zinc oxide sunscreens. Trying to eliminate some of those chemicals. Oh! And a friend happened to give me a Bare Minerals makeup kit for my birthday recently, so I've been using those products and loving them. Would love to ear more suggestions! Been reading a lot about our toxic deodorants...
  • If you are concerned about hair color at all there are brands that are ammonia free. They have no smell at all.
  • Now OB's are telling people to wait to get their hair colored? I thought that was an old debunked myth.  I'm getting a mani/pedi this weekend and my hair colored in a few weeks.

My OB told me there's not enough evidence one way or the other, so they recommend waiting until 2nd tri. They don't tell you not to do it, but to me, gray hair is not worth the risk.
