breastfeeding vs pumping STM needed

So I got my breast pump today! Super excited its the medela PISA. And of course I had to put it all together. And then I was curious so I tried it out. I had it on correctly as I did leak some but I didn't find it terribly uncomfortable like I thought I would. So silly FTM question. Does babies latch and breast feed feel different than that? Hurt more? Or does ir only hurt more because of the frequency of feedings? Do some moms not find breastfeeding painful at all?

I obviously only turned on the pump for maybe a minute and after getting used to it I thought it was fine. Is breastfeeding a whole new pain....or about the same? Or do I just had nipples made of steel lol

  • I think it's different for everyone.  Both my kids had very shallow latches and so yes, BF was very painful for me at first.  I had bloody nips and everything.  With both of them, but especially bad with my 2nd.  At the worst, I would pump just so I didn't have to put their little mouths on my nipple because it hurt so bad.  That probably sounds like we had a horrible BF-ing experience, but really it was only for those first couple of weeks.  I BF-ed my kids for 14 and 12 months and once I got through the initial phase, it was not painful at all.

  • It hurt at first for me bc DD had a bad latch and had trouble getting a good latch. She also would fall asleep while nursing and slip off a bit and then try to keep sucking. It got better much better.

  • Breastfeeding: Painful at first, then was easy.

    Pumping: Not painful, just annoying.

  • I agree with PPs. BFing started off painful (for maybe 2 weeks?), then became convenient, easy, and a nice way to snuggle/calm/bond with DD. Pumping was never painful, but was never convenient and I always considered it a chore. Kinda like doing dishes? Not painful but not enjoyable either.

Brace yourself for breastfeeding to be painful and be pleasantly surprised if it's not. It was terribly painful for me in the beginning, but after a few weeks was no longer painful at all and I'm so glad I stuck with it. Pumping never caused me any pain at all. Good luck!

  • I would agree that it's different for everyone and each baby is different. For me breastfeeding didn't hurt at all. I feel that was mostly because I worked with the lactation consultant to make sure I had a proper latch and also because I made sure to keep myself lubed up with nipple butter. Pumping sucked for me though and it would take me forever to just get a few ounces.
  • I never found BFing painful at all with DS. Until he got teeth and used them a couple times, then holy hell! Luckily he learned quickly not to bite. I thought pumping was somewhat uncomfortable, but not painful. Like PPs have said, different for eveyone.
