Experienced breast feeders returning to work questions...

I have my own office with a lock on the door. We also have a new lactation room/candidate testing room available. I'm thinking I will be more comfortable in my office pumping than lugging everything up to a different floor and finding someone else already using the lactation/testing room. What do you think??

  • I say do what makes you comfy!

  • Yeah, definitely wherever you are most comfy.  I'll have to use our supply closet and hope no one goes in there when I'm pumping.  I so wish I had an office.

  • Sounds like your office will be nice and once you get the hang of it, you'll have everything set up just the way you want it. You can also get a hands free pumping bra, I have an Arden Bra and love it. Then you can eat or work or play Tetris (or whatever) while you pump.

  • Haha, 'Pump and Bump'!

Using your own office sounds way more convenient than going to another room. Even though you have a lock, I would still put a note on the door, so you don't get bothered with people jiggling the handle then knocking, etc...

  • I agree that if you have an office, use it, but don't totally cancel out the available separate space. You may find using your office stressful depending on what kind of work you do if you keep working while pumping. Too many distractions available in your office may impact your output. I do definitely agree on the hands free bra wherever you choose to pump. If you do decide to use the lactation room and multiple people use it, then I'd just speak to them about their pumping schedule to see if you would overlap at all with your pumping schedule.

Last time I stuck to a small office on my floor rather than the lactation rooms because it was more convenient. I recommend whatever is more convenient and comfortable.

  • Do what makes you most comfortable.  Unfortunately, I work in a cube farm (offices with doors are upper management only), so I will have a dedicated space in the office area not currently being used.  We're a smaller satellite office of a very large company.

If I had my own office, I would use that.  When I had DS, I worked for another company and they had a dedicated lactation room, which was really nice.  It had a sink, comfy chair, fridge, books, etc.

  • A lot of places with a separate pumping room have a sign up sheet, so you can book the times that you would use it ahead of time.  If it is a new room for your facility, you might want to think about a system like that.

  • I used my own office. The only potential downside was that people coming by my locked door likely heard the telltale sounds of pumping, but that was NBD for me.

  • How does the handsfree bra work? Do you wear it all day or just slip it on when you're about to pump? Do you slip it on over your nursing bra? I'm afraid they don't make one large enough for me, so I might need to DIY it w a sports bra.

I got the XL medela one that target had online. I'm a 42DDish and while the hands free bra is a bit tight, I think it's supposed to be that way to keep it up. I tried zipping it up once... HA! That was a sight to see I'm sure. Now I leave it zipped all the time and just pull it over my head on top of my nursing bra. Works great.
  • Thanks @SuperTinkerham‌ for asking and everyone else for responding.
Our nursing relationship didn't last long enough the first time for me to pump at work. I have high hopes for this go 'round and it's good to read about the logistics of things.
    Thanks ladies!

  • I would stay put in your office as well. One thing to consider is access to a fridge for storing pumped milk & also to store used parts (if you keep the used parts in the fridge you don't need to wash them between every pump- huge time saver! I would wash them at home every night) But access to fridge is key.

So true! It sucks to wash every round. Also, depends on the hands free bra, most just go on when you pump. The Arden bra is an all day one for nursing and pumping. You can even nurse one side and hands free pump another with it, it's very neat. I have an XL and an generally around a 40DD or bigger.
