WWYD: Tubing down the river

DH wants to go tubing with our friends tomorrow. My qualms are that, not only do I have a hard enough time rolling around in bed without pain, so a tube is going to suck royally, but I have a fear of injury while pregnant. Going around a corner and having a tree jam into my stomach, or something of that nature. Its not a fast river, but its definitely work to navigate and make sure you're not hitting trees. WWYD? :-<

I personally wouldn't do it. I don't think you could harm the baby by crashing into a tree but what would sway my decision is the heat. (I live in Texas and even being outside in the backyard for a couple of minutes makes me light headed).

Could you call your OB and get their opinion? If you don't want to go, you can just say that the OB doesn't recommend it. I don't think my OB would be ok with it.

  • I wouldn't go. I've been tubing and i love it. I just think I would be too worried about dodging rocks on the bottom and trees to really enjoy myself.

Its only going to be a high of 72 here tomorrow, so heat isn't a big concern. But if it were going to be warmer that would definitely play a role.

I know.. there are these big culverts at the end that are fun to zoom through, but I had a friend fall out of her tube in one and got all bashed up and cut from the metal bolts and sstuff on the bottom. :-S

  • I think it depends. Are you and DH familiar with the river? (We live 2 min away from a river that is safe enough to tube and H grew up around here and knows the trouble spots to look out for.) I think it would probably be okay - wear a life vest - as long as you are comfortable with it.

          image         image

  • Is there a place near the end you can just hang out in the tube and anchor yourself?  I know the place not far from us you start at the top and end up in a big pond sort of area. People generally just hang out there after they come down river.

I honestly don't think I would do it. Even if I could just hang out in the calm water. In Texas heat, stuck waiting for other people, and you might be uncomfortable. Sounds miserable to me.

Send him, and you go get a massage and mani/pedi!

  • I probably wouldn't go. Not because of possible injury to baby per se, but because I would worry about the placenta detaching or becoming damaged if I smacked into something or got a really strong jolt. I'm probably more paranoid than necessary, though.

Could you call your OB and ask what they think? At least it would give you someone else to blame for saying no. ;)

I had a friend who went last summer at 8 months pregnant, so I'm sure I will be compared to her if I don't go.

We've tubed this river quite a few times. Its not white water rapids by any means, and DH would probably be doing all the work and maneuvering.

  • If it's a quiet river and no rapids/falls, that is different. I'd probably at least consider it, especially if you know the river pretty well. I might still call the OB for "permission." ;;)

I wouldn't go, but only because tubing to me means lazy floating down the river and your version sounds like a lot of work ;)

If it's mild and heat isn't a concern, I say go and enjoy!

Its usually a ton of work maneuvering this river but I can barely lean forward now, so DH will have to pull me along.

  • I would definitely not be tubing at this point in pregnancy.

Tubing is just riding the current of a calmer river in an inflatable tube. White water rafting is a bit more extreme.

  • I was suppose to go on a kayak day trip recently...slow moving shallow river. My H insisted I ask my OB, and to my surprise she said I probably shouldn't. Just due to the risk of an accident-falling out or getting hit by an oar or something. So even though I would be bummed if I was you, I don't think I would go.

  • I probably wouldn't go, but I'd want to for sure. I haven't been tubing in a few years! Although I don't know if I'd have as much fun with the beer.
  • Ok, so I love being out on the water and going to tubing however it would suck major to not be drinking (when everyone else is) and also just the length of time it will take.

It takes several hours and while it may be fun for a short spell, if you are at all uncomfortable you would be stuck out there for the duration.

Your friend who went last year sounds like a super trooper for doing it at 8 months. Maybe talk to her to get her real feelings on going while pregnant.

  • I think if you're having concerns about it being unsafe, you should follow your intuition or get a 2nd opinion from your OB.

I thought this was completely insane, but the zoo/waterpark where I live (Columbus, OH) won't even let pregnant women go on the lazy river.  This is probably to protect themselves from liability, but the other issue is that there's always a possibility of other people bumping into you, knocking you off, etc.
I had no idea! That's good to know. I was planning on going to Zoombezi next weekend!! I would have been irritated if I paid to go and couldn't get in. I wouldn't go tubing, but there is nothing wrong with the lazy river!

I'm annoyed to hear this. The more uncomfortable I get, the more I've been begging DH to let me go somewhere with a lazy river so I can float for a few hours. Can't they just let us have this one thing?!!

  • If there's any chance of having a placental abruption, I would not do it. If it's pretty calm and there wouldn't be much jerking or danger of hitting your belly, then I'd think you'd be fine.

Its calm for the most part, but there are faster tricky parts too. Those are very few, but I just can't bring myself to take that chance.

  • On the plus side if you go you don't have to worry about constantly peeing since you'll be on an inner-tube.  ;)

I've gotta make sure if I go that I get one with no bottom for that! And theres too many butt impaling sticks on that river so I'd rather have a bottom. :-S lord knows I dont want any anal probes.

    Oh yeah-that sounds pretty terrifying!

  • If it was me, I don't think I would go.  Tubing down a dirty river, stuck outside in the sun all day with limited access to restrooms, trouble getting in and out of the tube, not being super familiar with the river.  Not something I would enjoy in third tri, but to each her own.

    image
  • My mobility sucks so I wouldn't because maneuvering would be hard and I would be anxious about it. Tubing makes me nervous in good conditions though.

Holy shit! I'm glad I don't float your river! Have you thought about getting a two person raft (river safe raft of course)? That way, you can make DH paddle and you just sit back and enjoy. They are like $60-$80 here. Way better than just a donut tube

We talked about it, but we don't go often enough and its only warm here like 1.5-2 months out of the year. :(

It sounds like you don't want to go but are afraid to get flack for it since your friend did it when she was 8 months pregnant. :(

Just lie and say your OB advised against it.

  • If you have to talk yourself into it being ok, I'd skip it. But I'm pretty un risky when it comes to pregnancy.

  • I personally will not be tubing (We call it floating) in Missouri rivers this summer.  I am pretty sure all the water is extremely high if not in flood stage and when that happens more trees get pulled from their roots, rapids can be worse and easy to flip and get caught up in the current.   If its in a state park you could always call the office and ask the conditions if you are really wanting to go.  But i say go enjoy a spa day or go to a pool while they are gone :)

I agree! That's what we are doing now, camping and tubing for the Fourth. It's fun, stay safe and hydrated. I joke that no one would let the pregnant lady fall behind.
