Sorry, I need to be annoyed for a minute...

Does this article annoy anyone else as much as it's annoying me?!?

This mom was likely trying to rip-off Wal Mart with the Dollar General ad fiasco, and when her Wal Mart wouldn't do it, she decided not to buy that many boxes without them being on sale.  It doesn't mean she can't afford diapers!!!!!!!!!!!  It just means that she didn't want to spend the full price when she had hoped to pick up a bunch at the rip-off price.

The kindness of the older woman is wonderful...but I just wish she had been able to do something like that for someone who actually, really, truly couldn't afford something.  And now, somehow, it's all over the news as this amazing random act of kindness.  Ugh.  I'm not sure why it's annoying me so much...I think it's compounded by the posts I'm seeing elsewhere where people are actually mad at WAL MART for "not honoring their ad match policy" when really, Wal Mart is in the right on this one!  It's driving me nuts...I just need to stop reading about it...

I needed this vent, though, so, thanks for listening.  (I also think my lack of sleep might have something to do with getting so agitated!  Is it too early for a nap?)

  • hmm...yeah.  It would appear to me that someone who could afford to buy four jumbo boxes of pampers at one time, even on sale, can probably afford to buy diapers.

Andddd....what kind of person would accept someone buying them 3 boxes of diapers, when just a moment before she was prepared to pay (albiet, a lower price) for them? What was the price difference?  Maybe fifteen dollars?  Instead she got three for free.

The coupon deal that I saw on slickdeals was, Pampers $9.50, and LUVS $6.50 ALL SIZES ALL COUNTS!! YMMV
Dollar General has a coupon ad out for Pampers Diapers all sizes and all counts for $9.50. As well as LUVS for $6.50 all counts all sizes.

Since Walmart price matches, people were trying to buy the large boxes of Pampers and Luvs, for these discounted prices.  If this lady went in to buy 4 jumbo boxes of either brand for the discounted price and was then told she had to pay full price for three of the boxes, I can see how she wouldn't be able to afford it.  There's a huge difference in spending $100 on 4 boxes of Luvs and $26, for 4 boxes.

Am I missing something? Why is it clear that she was trying to take advantage? Maybe she only had enough money to afford 4 at that discounted price and was trying to get more diapers while she could afford them. Did I read it wrong?
The article doesn't mention the fact that the mom was probably trying to use the Dollar General ad match...that's something I'm assuming, since that's been a big fiasco this week.  So, there is still a change (though I think it's probably very small) that she was trying to ad match some other deal, but, I doubt it.  If this article doesn't mention that the mom was trying to do some sort of ad match, other articles about this incident do.

Dollar General doesn't sell boxes...they only sell up to the Jumbo pack, which is actually LESS THAN $9.50 every day at Wal Mart.  So, trying to go to Wal Mart and price match for a size that Dollar General doesn't even sell is trying to rip off Wal Mart.  That's the same as stealing to me.

But, still. She was trying to stock up because of a deal. I don't see that as taking advantage. Being able to afford one price versus another doesn't make her a bad person? I don't know the facts one way or the other. But, I have a hard time assuming she was being shady and has money that she wasn't willing to spend.
Well, I'll also give her a small benefit of the doubt that she didn't KNOW that she was trying to rip off Wal Mart (although, really, do people really think that sort of deal would be true?).  But when the lady behind her offered to pay, she should have explained it to her, not just accepted free diapers.  The lady behind her probably didn't understand what was going on and really thought that the lady just couldn't afford diapers.  It's pretty shady to allow an old lady to think that and spend $100 on you without explaining the situation.

I'll take your word for that, I've never been to Dollar General to look at diapers so I honestly have no idea how they sell them.  I read about the issues with people trying to get the price match deal online.  I was trying to explain what the deal was to the PP so she knew what it was.

  • Ok, I will retract my comment about whether she can afford the diapers or not... I can totally understand the difference between paying 9.50 and whatever it is they charge for jumbo pampers at Wal-Mart. I was not aware of this Dollar General diaper fiasco situation. But still...letting someone buy you three packs of jumbo dipes? That I can't agree with.

Yeah, I totally understand that difference, too.  And if I had gone up there thinking I'd pay $40 and instead it was over $100, I would most definitely put all but one box back, too.  So I'm not necessarily faulting the mom for that part of it (although, again, if anyone really thought that deal was legit, that's a stretch).  But it's the actions after that annoy me.
