Car Seat for 3.5 YO

I know this has been discussed a lot--but I am still in a bind.

I  need to get a new seat for my 1 yo and am going to transfer my 3.5 YO's convertible to him (Evenflo O's)...

My 3.5 YO will then need a seat.  I want to purchase a seat that is the last seat he will need. I have been looking at 3 in 1 options such as Britax Frontier, Evenflo Maestro, Graco Nautilus.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

He is on the big side.  He weighs 45 ibs and is on the taller side.  I expect him to continue to grow big and tall since my husband is soo big.  Any help would be appreciated! This is stressing me out!

Re: Car Seat for 3.5 YO

  • I answered you in the other thread too :)  Definitely no to the Maestro because it only harnesses to 50 pounds. The Graco Argos (like the Nautilus but has a no rethread harness and an extra 5 pound limit) is a good choice (18" top harness slots and 70 pound harness limit).    The Britax Frontier is great but expensive because of the 20.5"  harness slots and 90 pound harnessing capability.  You could consider the Britax Pioneer which is the lower end version of the Frontier because it has lower harness/weight limits (18.5 and 70 pounds) but it's only getting you .5 more harness height and the same weight as the Argos but for a higher price tag.

  • elmoali--awesome thank you! You can tell you have done your research (and save me a lot of time).  Good to know about the  Maestro since my 3 yo is almost grown out right now!!

  • Also---I am now torn between the frontier and the Graco Argos.  Do you have the Argos by any chance? Or the frontier?

  • I have neither.  My kid is a peanut so we were able to get him the Kids Embrace Batman seat.  It doesn't work for a lot of kids because it has lower harness limits.  I would really suggest going and putting your hands on them because if you can afford both, it comes down to personal preference.  They're both highly recommended seats - it just depends on what you like :)

  • Measuring his torso height though may make you lean in one direction over the other.  If he has an incredibly long torso, the Britax is a better choice.  If his height in his his legs, you can do the Argos and save yourself a chunk of change.

  • I think overall his legs are pretty short--seems longer in the torso.  He isn't incredibly tall for his age--just weighs a lot.  I checked boys toysrus and walmart and neither carry the seats.  He really is a pretty big kid though--for his age especially.

I think I can order on amazon---the big worry I have though is that either seat will take up a ton of room in my SUV.  right now we have the baby seat for my 1yo and convertible for my 3yo.  I still want to be able to use the third seat if needed.

My 1Yo is a peanut though--so I think the harness height and weight situation may not be as big of a deal for him since hes tiny.

  • So you want the two seats to be side by side?  This is where I have to bow out and say my knowledge ends lol  But!  If you join the FB group Car Seats for the Littles they are AMAZING.  They can tell you what car seats will puzzle well together in your particular car and will fit your kids well.  Everything I know I learned from them :)

  • Okay--thank you soo much! I think it makes it more difficult that he is soo big! Also not trying to spend a ton if I don't have to (and will be buying for 2 cars)

    Thanks a bunch!
