Child Trailers?

Has anyone had much experience with child trailers like the Thule Chariot or the Burley? There are so many models to choose from so I thought I would see if anyone had any input or opinions. I'm starting my research to decide what to get so I can find one on CL.

We live rurally and would be using it on dirt roads quite a bit and getting into some dirt paths/easy trails as DD gets older. We would use it on pavement as well, but not primarily. Features like shocks and knobby tires would be a plus. Thanks!

Re: Child Trailers?

  • We have one. I forget what brand it is- Booyah, maybe- but it's a 2-seater. Dd loves riding in it (she's almost 3). Baby can't ride in it until around a year.
DH likes to pull it with the bike and use it as a separate stroller. I hate it as a stroller. Go check out a few and see what you think. :) ours rarely leaves the pavement so I'm no help to you. Haha.

  • We have a $100 cheapie double trailer from bikenashbar.com and it has worked well for us. We'll get more use out of it next year when Tessa can sit up in it, though.
  • We have a chariot cougar 2 and we love it. We had a bassinet attachment for when both kids were newborns and now we use an infant sling for dd2 and dd1 just sits in it. We use it for biking, jogging, running and it also has a cross country ski attachment. We got most attachments used and bought the chariot off of a friend used. It's all such great quality that it does not feel used....still all seems new. We use it on dirt paths, hiking in mountains, pathways etc. and it constantly holds up. I highly recommend it!
  • We probably only will want the bike and XC skiing attachments. The bob does the strolling, but the fact that the trailers can be totally enclosed to keep LO warm with blankets and toys is appealing for winter walks. I'm thinking to start with a single to be as low profile as possible. Anyone used these on snow or ice while strolling?

@Teresa1896‌ why does DH like using the trailer as a stroller, but you don't?
  • We have the burley Cub and love it! It has a harder bottom and softer seats than the other models. Dh takes ds all over DC and the trails around us in it

We use ours in snow and on ice here in calgary and its pretty great. I like our bob as well but the chariot is great (especially for winds/blowing snow we have here). We bike out daughter to daycare year round and she stays cozy warm in the chariot.

I will say that we got a double for our daughter even though we only had one and loved it because we had tons of space for groceries/extra items for picnics etc. now that we have two we don't know where to put it all lol. Plus we knew we would have another child and didn't want to have to sell a single to buy a double and I'm glad that was our choice.

Compared to our other strollers, I feel like it's rickety when pushed. The front wheel is always jumping one way or another. Maybe it's just the way DH has it set up? The stance is also too wide for me, personally. It takes up the whole sidewalk! But that's probably specific to our trailer and not every trailer.
I think he also feels the need to talk it up since it was his idea and he picked it out!
