-gift card to the grocery store they shop at -NICU memory book -personalized blanket/book etc -gas card since they will be going back and forth to the hospital -pay for someone to clean their house - a nice journal for the mom to write in (milestones while in the nicu)
Gift cards to restaurants/ grocery stores near the nicu or gas cards ( i was a 45 min drive from the nicu ans spent a lot on gas) lotion, maybe a cute preemie outfit or onesie for her little one for when they can wear clothes, a picture frame and everything else mentioned already
I agree with Chapstick, lotion, preemie clothes, gas cards, bottles of water, snacks, etc that other ladies named. I also agree with some type of journal and blankets. Maybe even preemie hats too or mittens for the baby's hands since she may not get to cut them too soon or preemie outfits with those attached.
cdhaslag When buying preemie clothes, please stick to the basics. One cute outfit is probably enough, because most likely she won't be allowed to travel with the baby outside their home for a while, so we lived in the nightgowns / sleep sacks. Preemie hats are also nice, but the regular baby mitts will work on a preemie, so no special mittens needed.
Also, preemie diapers are also a good thing, as you don't usually get those, even though the NICU is usually really good at giving you some before you leave. The memory book is a great idea, lots of snacks, the gas card / target card, and hand sanitizer! Nothing scented - they recommend no perfumed stuff around preemies because it's too much for their systems to take.
Also, the two best gifts we recieved were A&A blankets (a 4 pack of the muslin ones) and a "lovey". The blankets were so soft, and to this day D is super attached to his - we used them in his incubator along with the "lovey" that the nurses gave me - they said to sleep with it and put a little colostrum on it so that baby can smell you even when you are away. It made me feel better knowing he could smell me even when I had to leave.
Also, a nice pair of slippers - you can usually leave some personal stuff in your NICU room, and since I basically lived there, the slippers were awesome (hospitals are cold!).
I second the preemie memory book/baby book. My sister bought me a preemie baby book off amazon and it had all the preemie milestones in it so I was able to record everything---cpap, kangaroo time, weight in grams--all the stuff specific to the NICU. We also have a regular baby book and I still have certain feelings about filling it out bc so much doesn't pertain to us.
Gas cards are also good...we were lucky to be about 20 minutes away, but going to and from so much it still added up. We are out a lot, so gift cards to restaurants, grocery store, meals, etc were helpful.
I did a lot of reading in there when we were unable to have LO out of the isolette so magazines, books, etc were nice to have.
I disagree with statement about preemie outfits. Even though we didn't get out much, as soon as LO was able to wear clothes in the NICU, I loved being able to pick out her outfit for the day. Same with coming home--we weren't out and about all that much at first, but it was still fun to dress her up for us to enjoy.
If I think if anything else I'll be sure to let her know. Thoughts for your friend and her LO!
