Pelvic Pain

So I am 30 weeks pregnant today and for the past few days I have been having horrible aches and pains in my groin area and my hips...or pretty much my whole pelvis area. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to relieve the ache a bit??

Re: Pelvic Pain

  • I just asked this specifically about cervix pain, but I imagine the answers that come up on that thread could be helpful for you as well. Its just called "Cervix Pain"

  • Are you working out a lot? I started getting this bad at night the last few weeks and I realized it was much worse when I would go running. It's been a lot better since I switched to the elliptical. Also, drinking more water in the evenings seemed to help - though it results in more middle of the night bathroom trips :/
  • I've had this going on since about 16 weeks, though mainly just while or after lying down. Baby girl is head down and pretty low, so I'm sure that's not helping. I agree with @Conradgallagher that you should read the thread about cervix pain as I think it has some good ideas that would also work with relieving pelvis pain. My only other advice that isn't mentioned in that thread is sleeping with a pillow between your knees. It hasn't made my pain go away, but it has helped.

  • It sounds like pubic symphysis pain that comes from the joints ligaments in the pelvic area prepping for childbirth. I am in physical therapy for it to give me tips and exercises to reduce the pain but doesn't seem like we can do much cause it's the bodies natural way of prepping for baby to go through the birth canal.
    Tips:
    One step at a time
    Smaller strides when walking
Put knees together when getting out of car and bed
    Sitting butterfly style
Put on pants and other bottom clothing sitting down
  • Try sitting on an excersize ball and swaying your hips in a circular motion...this helps me with my pelvic pain!!!! Good luck!

Yeah sounds like pubis symphysis or pelvic girdle pain.  It sucks, I've had it with both pregnancies.

Rissa had some great advice.  Other things I've noticed help some:
    - an SI belt, to stabilize your pelvis.
    - chiropractor - mine helped a ton in the beginning, and still helps some now, but adjustments don't last as long as I get bigger.
    - the more balanced you are on both legs, the less pain you'll have.  Try to keep your legs together as you move from sitting to standing positions (as mentioned above, getting in and out of the car or out of bed, etc, it helps to swing your legs over with your knees together, then get up with your weight on both legs instead of just one).
    - stretches that open up the pelvis.

My biggest pain trigger is sleep position.  If I sleep on my side, no matter how many pillows I use or how I prop my knees apart, my PGP is horrible when I wake up.  If I sleep on my back, propped up with pillows, I have almost no pain in the morning.  So if your pain is the worst in the morning, changing your sleeping position might help.  Good luck!

  • Thanks for asking @kymetime69! I have been experiencing pelvic pain for the last 4 days, and it's especially worst when I wake up in the middle of the night to pee. I will try some of these suggestions, thanks ladies :-)
  • Thanks for all the great advice! Most of these tips I have actually been doing but I def want to try the exercise ball. Lately sleeping has been the worst. I cant find a position that I can sleep in especially on my side even wjth pillows so I might try the propped up way on my back. Its very sore to walk and sitting down doesn't hurt at all. Its weird. So thanks again for the advice I will try anything for a littlw relief. Hope everyone is feeling good!!
  • The only treatment is to have your baby. Hang in there! You instantly feel better after baby is born.
