for teethers: were the top two a horror show?

I AM TALKING WEEKS WORTH OF A HORROR SHOW.  DS already has his bottom two teeth fully in, and his top teeth look sorta puffy, and i swear i saw (but could not feel) something starting to come in, but now today i don't wtf?  anyway for the past few weeks he has been on and off clingy, sleep issues, randomly screaming at night, wanting to nurse a ton etc....     he JUST turned 8 months--- if not teeth could it be a growth spurt? developmental (wonder weeks-- i shudder using that phrase!

i am DYING from the sleep issues, he is, on average,  up at 10, 12, 2, 6 and up for day around 8-9.     before he was only waking at 1 am and 6 am to eat, which was no big deal for me.  i am vaguely considering ferber in the future, but what if it's his teeth? but should it last this long? HELP!

and don't give me your hylands teething tablet/amber necklace hippie dippie recs!

finally: tylenol vs. motrin? which is better for teefs?

and, for your time (he tried to eat the sticker right after this pic)

DD was a tiny bit cranky when her top two teeth were cutting through but nothing like you're describing.  It could simply be that he's having a hard time teething, but if it's really horrible it's worth having him checked out.  FWIW i think Motrin is the strongest pain reliever.  Tylenol is useless

Also, I like titted your pic, not the fact that your kid is making you a zombie ;)

  • Ugh YES!!!! he has 4 bottom teeth and 2 top ones on the sides...but the 2 middle top ones have been taking FOREVER and he's been so miserable, cranky, clingy, not sleeping well...I can't wait for those damn teeth to break through!

I could have written this post myself. I hope it's over soon or he may be free to good home.

  • Motrin is an anti inflammatory as well as pain. You could try alternating and use both.

  • Motrin and then Tylenol a few hours later if it's really brutal. Sounds like teeth. They deft go in and out.

  • Omg that's brutal but he is adorable! I think Motrin works way better. Tylenol really doesn't help my LO.

  • We are going through the top teeth now. The bottom were horrible for us and so far the top are not as bad. We have 1 broke through and 1 coming in. It's nothing like you are describing but I am noticing a lot more discomfort the last few days along with sleep schedule changing and fussiness.
  • Yes the top two were horrible

The top two have been an absolute mother fucking shit show of a disaster. He's been miserable, up all night (several nights of every hour), biting my nipples, etc. Add in his third ear infection ...

Motrin. Hands down. All motrin, all the time.

Hudson had 6 teeth.  Top 2 came in about 2 months ago.  Motrin vs Tylenol? I see no difference except time between dosing.  We also use the camilia teething liquid which does help for only a short period BUTTTT more importantly it helps to show me its his teeth and not something else.  Teething issues last about 4 days with real problems.  Not weeks.  When he starts fussing and drooling a butt load at this point we know we have 4 days of crap ahead.

  • @dknight413‌ What is a nutter?

I'm assuming dd is teething. She's still gummy at 9 months but has been waking up multiple times per night, gnawing on everything, and drooling like crazy.

I have been using the Hylands teething tablets and Motrin (kind of alternating). Motrin is an anti-inflammatory and Tylenol sucks ass. Also frozen things are helpful.

D has 7 teeth. She had 8 and then it disappeared. She teethes like a champ. When it is really bad; we use Motrin. She also loves Slushy ice. There is also an 8 month sleep regression. I had to add an extra nap and put her bedtime from 9:30 until 11. Last night she woke up just once. I'm hoping this is the solution.

  • We are experiencing the same thing. I don't give Motrin without food, so if we have a MOTN wake up and determine we need to give something for pain, we give Tylenol. However, at bedtime just before his bottle, we give Motrin.

As I type this at 3am, I just gave Tylenol and he's back to sleep. :)

  • We just cut the front two and the two on either side of the fronts are cutting right now. Shit show is correct. At this age I wonder if part of it isn't also that they are starting to get clingy/go through separation anxiety though. Talk about throwing a fit anytime I leave the room. I feel bad for DH and think he takes it personally sometimes. Motrin all the way...Tylonol does nothing.

I don't know if it's because my son was teething or he was just going through a growth spurt but for about two weeks he would wake up in the middle of the night every two hours fussy and wanting to eat. then the nights were normal.. good luck I heard it could last for a month.

He has his bottom two out already and one if his too is coming in.

We have 8 teeth here, and I think we're starting on molars already - this kid is just nuts.

Anyways, I digress. The top two teeth were the worst for us. Motrin at night (lasts longer), Tylenol as needed any other time. I also liked the "natural" orajel stuff - it did seem to help during the day. I also got the Popsicle thingies from Target so he could nom on some cold stuff, he loved cold washclothes with a bit of water on them, and the Nuby teether.

If you don't think it's teeth, Ferber method isn't really as bad as it sounds. I recommend to read the book first, it will make tons of sense.

Emerson got the bottom two middles and the top two next-to-the-middles and his temperament and sleep wasn't really affected much, if at all. Now, the top two middles are both coming through and it's a mother fucker.

Oh, and Motrin, deft. Tylenol is fucking useless.

  • The top two have been PURE HELL! She got her bottom with no problem, but the top are just now fully in (I think) and it was about 3 1/2 weeks of sleepless crankiness. last night she actually slept through the night again, so I hope like hell it is over.

Ibuprofen seemed to help her through it.

After seeing these suggestions last night I gave DS Motrin and teething tablets in his bottle and he slept through the night...for the 3rd time in his life #winning

  • If the top teeth are worse than the bottom teeth I might go into a corner and cry. That said I use dye free acetaminophen, but only because I couldn't find a dye free ibuprofen. (I don't know if it's the red dye or something else, but when I give LO motrin she turns into a nutter).

You said bulk--is 1 ounce the largest you've found? Also, does your LO take this pretty easily? I've been using the equate brand and she likes the flavor.

Yeah, 1 oz is the biggest I've seen, I just pick up several whenever I'm there. He'll eat anything, he actually reaches for the syringe at this point. I've used all kinds of brands, I get it from Family Dollar or Dollar General sometimes, too. No complaints here!
