Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Nap time woes

So my almost 15 week old hasn't been the greatest napper, but he would always go down for naps and sleep usually a minimum of 45 minutes with a mix of 1-2.5 hour naps here and there. Wake time isn't past 1.5 hours.

This past week he seriously cannot make it to 45 minutes for any nap without waking up and crying/not getting through those sleep cycles. He has a whole nap routine (quiet/calm activities towards end of wake time, swaddle, white noise and put down drowsy). Is this just a phase?? I know day sleep is developing now, but ugh. Because I'm missing my happier and not overtired baby. I always try and extend his naps if he wakes, but the pick up and put down could go on forever it seems or I'm stuck holding him. I'm not looking to CIO either. Oh and sleep regression at night too these last two week from sttn (7-8 hour stretches). I'm one tired mommy!

I'm thinking it the 4 month wakefulness... because identical problem here and I've seen numerous posts just like this. Doesn't make it any easier, but nice to know that we're not alone.

  • Sorry! Hang in there! At least I can know I'm not going crazy or doing something wrong.
  • We went through the same thing (day and night). It was tough.

Keep his window of wakefulness to 60-90 minutes to avoid him getting overtired throughout the day, so watch for signs of tiredness. This should help lengthen naps and encourage more uninterrupted night sleep.

Once I was told this (by a sleep consultant), things got better for us. I noticed DD couldn't go more than 60 minutes awake, 75 MAX. So I would be sure to put her down so she would fall asleep on time. Making sure she didn't get overtired helped with night-time sleep and also helped me help her extend her naps at the 45 minute mark (I didn't do pick up put down, I would just replace her paci, shhh her and rub her head).

Thanks for the tip.  Even though I knew that this period of time was coming up and that it happens to so many babies, it doesn't help how tired I feel after a night of LO waking up every hour or less.  I usually just watch his cues but will pay a little closer attention to the clock during this time.

We're going through the same thing now. Of course it started the week DH was away on a business trip. LO is waking up at 40 minutes on the dot for every nap. So far *knock on wood* she's still been pretty good at night, although she is fussing a few more times for paci replacement. Being overtired is making her so cranky, and me so exhausted :( Hope the phase passes soon for all of us!
