XP: First day of in-home daycare

My son will be 8 weeks old on Friday, and next Monday is his first day of an in-home daycare while my husband and I are working.  I want to send an "information paper" for our lovely provider with all of his things, just to let her know about approximately how many bottles he's taking per day and how long he has been sleeping.  What other information would you put in this paper?  She's a mom to two kids already so I'm sure she's got everything under control, I'd just like to give her a sense of his "normal routine" (as much as an 8 week old can have a routine).

Any help you can offer would be great...XP'd to Working Moms!

  • I love love love when parents write up a note for us about the baby or child.

    I usually ask:
How is the baby fed? Bottle.BM. how many oz. How do they like to be held

How does the baby sleep. What are the tricks.

Describe their personality. Their quirks. What does their cries mean. How are they soothed.

What shouldn't one do. Example : no paci.

How was the pregnancy and birth?
    What milestones have been achieved?
How does the family spend time together?
    Typical daily routine?

    I'll think of more!

  • Awesome, thank you!  I know a "routine" is over-rated for an 8 week old, I just want to make sure she's got all the info she could need to make it easier on her. I appreciate your insight!!!

  • Ask for an info sheet to come home.

How many wet diapers? Dirty? How long were naps? When? Amount of play time? Temperament? Fun fact of the day?

It makes such a huge difference in knowing about the child before to make the transition easier.

In terms of receiving a sheet. Some day cares do. Some don't. I work with older children (Tots) so usually the day doesn't allow it as I would be spending my day writing up those sheets than attending to the children. However, if there is a change in the usual pattern of the day for the child I always mention it. Some places though will have daily record sheets for you. Some won't.
  • Be realistic in your diaper record expectations. It's tough for many moms to remember to log every single diaper (I personally couldn't even remember at the hospital and haven't recorded one since); imagine if you were caring for several kids at once. A good caregiver can tell you if the pattern was normal or not, though. An average. I'd be satisfied with that.

You'd be my favourite parent :)

As long as the kids stay happy and healthy and I can tell they're being well cared for, I don't worry too much. I like the idea of daycare not being identical to home. Kids need variety, and most adapt well to having different rules and different schedules between home and daycare.

  • Thanks everyone, this has been super helpful! I'm really laid back about this whole thing -- she's gonna figure out what works for her & him, I don't need her to keep a certain "routine" -- but I wanted her to have somewhere to start :)
