What goes "back to normal" and when?

I have been noticing drastic differences in certain body parts lately, and can't get it out of my head - is this the new me forever? Or will it go 'back to normal'? For example, not only are my feel extra puffy and swollen but I also feel like maybe they are actually wider? My areola are like the size of a silver dollar, will they go back to their nickle size? Same with my labia, just huge. I've read some reports that say everything goes back to the way it was before, but I've also read some reports that contradict that. So what's the deal? And is there any kind of timetable on this, like everything will be 'normal' in a month? Or a month after breastfeeding? Or never!?!?!

I think every one is different. Most stuff goes back to normal a few weeks after birth. All of the swelling and extra fluids take a toll.

My first thought was "NOTHING WILL EVER BE THE SAME AGAIN!!!"

But then that seemed a bit dramatic.

  • Nipples after breastfeeding if you do.
Feet a couple of weeks after birth if it is water weight related. Some people's feet dont go back.
Labia about 4 weeks later I guess.

  • I breastfed my son for over 2 years, my nipples weren't crazy huge that entire time, but I honestly couldn't tell you when they went back to their former size, though it was while still nursing.

My linea nigra faded after a few weeks, but definitely stuck around longer than I expected it to.

I don't remember any labia swelling until after delivery at least, and my feet I didn't even realize had swollen until I noticed how much slimmer they looked a few days after delivery last time.

I'm sure the answer on this will vary depending on the person. I know many women who did go up a shoe size or 2 after pregnancy, and then of course there are others whose entire bodies seem to forget they even carried a kid and go entirely back to their former selves in a shockingly short time.

Personally, I say don't even start to be concerned about anything (weight included) until at least after your 6 week postpartum visit. It took time for your body to change the way it did, it won't instantly be what it once was, if at all.

  • My nipples went back to almost normal after I stopped breastfeeding, but my boobs stayed huge. Honestly, I went up 2 cup sizes while breastfeeding and then just stayed that way after DD weaned. I would say it's awesome, but I suspect it has something to do with my overall weight gain after DD, so that's less awesome.

By my six week checkup my vag was all back to normal again and also healed up from the tearing during birth.

I can't remember exactly for most of this.  My feet swelled horribly last time and I swore they got wider, but I had an October 30th baby and was able to wear shoes again pretty quickly when the weather got colder.  I had insane night sweats for at least 1-2 weeks which were disgusting but got rid of all the water weight.

My boobs did not last time or this time change during pregnancy.  I don't remember any other lady parts being particularly swollen either, but I had a c/s.

I'm hoping it doesn't take a year to lose the baby weight again this time, but I dealt with my super colicky baby by stress eating which did not help.

  • I don't think it all went back to "normal" but it definitely was way closer to normal.

  • It depends. Gotta love that answer.

My feet went back to the original size with my first, but are a half size bigger after my second. My labia was probably fine after about 4 weeks each time. My areola never really changed, so I can't comment on that.

In general, for me, if it was going to go back, it was back by about 4 weeks post partum...excluding weight.

  • Depends on the person.

My boobs got huge when I was breastfeeding then flattened out. Areola went back to normal after I weaned. But nope. Boobs are NOT what they used to be.

Labia was very swollen due to a hard labor and took about a month to get better.

Feet went back to normal quick.

Stomach flattened out quick, but was squishy for about 9 months.

    Voice is still deep.

  • It depends is exactly it. I pretty much felt healed after 6 weeks. I finally felt like I got my body back to normal after I started running again when DD was around 1, but I could've started exercising way earlier, I just didn't.

I was back in my pre pregnancy jeans about 7-8 months later. My boobs were huge with DS, and never went back even after weaning. I nursed for 15 months. So since my boobs were so big, I felt like my upper body was shaped differently. I couldn't wear a lot of my dresses from pre kids days.

I don't really remember when the rest went back. It really does depend on the person.
