Packing for Trips

When you go on a trip, do you pack for them, or do you let your kids pack their own stuff?  Do you give them a list? How much of the process do you oversee?

Re: Packing for Trips

  • We are packing for a trip right now.

DD is 2 yo, so I pack for her.

DS is almost 5 yo.  He likes to pack for himself.  I just double-check what he puts in his suitcase.  He has gotten better recently about packing more than just toys.  We took a weekend trip last month, and he packed all the toiletries for himself and DD.  I was very impressed!

  • Well, when DS has packed in the past, he packas what is essential for him which is books and toys.  He would then back 10 pairs of shorts and 2 shirts.  So I would always have to go behind him and even things out.  This year, I think I will give him a list and see how he does.  Definitely want him to be involved in the process.

DS is 5 1/2. I pack for him. The last few times, I have given him a few options for any occasions we have to "dress" for, but that's about it. If I let him pack on his own, he'd have every pair of plaid shorts and tie-dyed shirt he owns and nothing else. ;)

I pack for both my 7yr old and 3.5yr old. Lord knows what we would end up with if they did it themselves!

  • We have a thing we call "the red toy bag" which we use to take toys and books on trips.  In the past, I put the kids in charge of reorganizing and packing the red toy bag.  I would do their clothes and toiletries.  Now that they're older, they pack their own stuff.

I have a list on the computer that I use when packing.  I used to insist that the kids use it, and I would check to make sure they had everything on the list.  This year, DS has insisted twice that he can do it without the list and without me checking.  The first trip he forgot pajamas and the second trip he forgot long pants.  So, not a disaster either time, but I think I have him convinced to use the list again!

  • I pack the clothes with input from them and they pack their backpacks with stuff for the back seat of the car or airplane ride.

HA HA same here! We just flew home last night from a 3-week vacay with the grandparents and I packed for my 7yr and 3yr. The 7yr expressed interest in bringing some of her new clothes and a particular pair of PJs, other than that she couldn't care less about choosing clothes. :)
