Let's have the period talk

I'd like to start off by saying I'm a FTM. I'm almost 7wks PP, and I just started my period yesterday. I was suppose to have my 6wk doc appt yesterday but we had to reschedule it because she can't do a full exam with me bleeding. My question is, is it normal to have a heavier first period? And does it last longer than usual? And when do you think it's okay to start wearing tampons? BTW I had a c section.

I would also just like to add I definitely didn't miss this for 10months.

Re: Let's have the period talk

  • The info I've gathered is that your first period after having a baby can be quite an ordeal. And the longer you go without one PP the worse it will be. And as for tampons, you can use them if your doctor clears you. If you have had sex and was fine, it probably is fine. If not, maybe not chance it.

I was cleared and sex was kinda uncomfortable, even though I am a die hard tampon user, I will stick to pads for the first couple of times just to avoid irritation. I'm considering the diva cup as well.

However, I have yet to get my first period, so I am only taking from what I've heard.

  • I got mine last week (7-1/2 wks pp). Honestly, it wasn't any different than it used to be. I used a tampon (was momentarily scared to put it in) but it was completely fine. Don't know if my experience is normal for the first one.

I also did not miss this for the last ten months.

Probably a silly question.. Are my tampons from before getting pregnant still good? Should I throw and buy new?

I tend to stock pile when on sale and I'm sure they've sat for almost just as long. I would think they are fine as long as they didn't get wet. Even then they are individually sealed :) I'd use them. I used a pack of pads now that I think of it I bought a couple years ago as emergencies and used them PP. I'm still kicking.
  • If you haven't had your check up yet, I'd avoid tampons for this one.

  • I just started bleeding the other day. From what I hear, if EBF, it's common to have what appears to be a period around this time and have it go away again for months.

  • @katsmewsings‌ it's possible not to have one at all until you stop BF. DS is 8 weeks and I have yet to have anything.

In a way it's nice to go longer. In another that first period is going to be rough.
  • @anniemore‌ my cervix never soften, never dilated. I didn't exactly go through labor.

I'm now planning on using tampons during this period for the fact that I have pads that if I don't use up they will never get used. So I figured I'll use them up now. I always hated getting my period during the hot weather I feel so gross.
  • I got my period just this past Saturday and for two days I was wearing a tampon and a pad. Even then those two couldn't hold up half the time. I wore both because the tampon would barely last an hour and I had the pad as back up.

  • @anniemore‌ so the same thing just happened to me. I got home from visiting with my friend. Soaked through the pad, my underwear and my leggings. Thank goodness it didn't soak all the way to my car seat, because it's a lease. That would have been terrible. I'm about to go food shopping.. I think I'm gonna have to stop half way through shopping to change it up. Just so it doesn't happen again

Another silly question, I'm almost 11 weeks pp. Should I be worried I haven't gotten my period yet? I am EBF so I am aware that can impact timing and really it could be months but now I'm worried hearing everyone else talking periods! Anyone else EBF?

It's common to not get a period until later while ebf. I didn't get mine with DD until 10 mo. PP if i remember correctly.

  • I just got my period at exactly 6 weeks pp. I nursed for a week and pumped for another and have been bottle feeding since (so 4 weeks). I also took my first birth control pill today. I had my 6 week check up so I guess it all worked out. My period seemed to be it's normal self.
  • @mkquinnwedding‌ I've already been taking my BC for a month. At my post op appt which was 2wks pp, the doc gave me my BC pills and said I could start that Sunday. So I would talk to your doctor. Because I believe it's fine to take BC before you get your first pp period.
  • With my first got it a year+ PP. This time got it at week 7 right after I started the pill. EBF with both. Boo periods!

  • I am pumping + supplementing and I started what looked like a period less than 5 weeks pp! I was so shocked, I know I'm not EBF or anything but I thought lactation in general would keep it away longer than that. Elapsed time between birth and the start of bleeding basically amounted to a longish normal cycle! It's been about 9-10 days now, and while it has definitely slowed down it doesn't look ready to end yet. Weird.

@florassecret - I use the diva cup and I LOVE it. So much more comfortable and convenient then tampons.

I just got my period, at almost 6 weeks PP after I started the mini-pill. I BF and supplement formula 2x daily. Same as with my first DS even though he was formula fed. Darn, I was looking forward to going longer without a period due to BFing but whatevs. I have not noticed a decrease in my milk from the pill- In fact, my pump broke so I have been a stickler about making DS2 feed around the clock and I seem to have plenty more milk. This period though does seem a bit hevier then my normal, pre-baby ones, which is common I guess because again, it was the same as with DS1.

Got mine yesterday 6 wks pp. Felt fine, no cramps none of the usual symptoms besides what was in the pad. Then today at 5am I woke up with a bangin migraine nausea cramping lower back pain dizziness. I even prayed to the porcelain god once. It was miserable. Took an antacid and that seems to have helped the nausea/vomiting and I'm chugging water. I also took 500 mg of naproxen. Took me til now to feel better. Just in time for my dad to take DD for the day. Did I mention my husband is on call for work so none of us slept. DD is going through week 6 growth spurt!!

Can I just say....I love my husband & my dad!!

Boo... I just got mine yesterday 9 weeks pp. wow... Is anyone else having a super heavy one??? I'm onto a new box of tampons super that never happens to me....

I got my first PP period at 13 weeks after I had DS and 6 weeks after Paragard placement and it was a horror show. Seriously, it was CSI worthy. But then so were the rest of my periods with Paragard.

I got Mirena a couple of weeks ago and I think I'm having my period now (7 wks PP) but it keeps coming and going so who the heck knows? If it is AF, it sure is an easy one. Not a ton of bleeding, very little cramping. I hope Mirena treats me better than Paragard did.

ETA: I'm EBF this time. With my first I had just quit pumping and switched to formula.

Diva cup is awesome! If you haven't tried it, you should! Just FYI ;)
  • I haven't tried Diva Cup (which just autocorrected to cucumber...heh), but I used Instead Softcup before I got pregnant and loved it. I like that it's disposable and I don't have to wash it. Our toilet isn't close to our sink, so washing could get messy for me.

  • For all those who think tampons are uncomfortable, try Ob tampons. They are so much better. I couldn't believe how uncomfortable tampax was when I had to buy them because Ob was out of stock. Never again.
