Another feeding question

I know... there have been a million discussions of this, but I still have another question.  When first introducing finger foods/more solids how did you start?  LO eats puffs and avocado at this point.  I don't really know what to do next and how big to cut it?  Everything online just says dice... but how small?  I know people also say different sizes for different things.  For instance.. I have thought about doing pears or peaches next... what size would you dice those?  Or this weekend we want to introduce ground chicken... how small of a piece for that?  Would anyone mind sharing what were the first 2-3 things you introduced, and how small you dice a few things?  Just so I can get an idea.

TIA!

We started with banana, very ripe nectarines and peaches (no skin), chunks of sweet potato, very cooked broccoli, boiled carrots, peas, cooked black beans. We started pretty small initially, like the size of the tip of your pinky. Most if the fruit I had to help her with bc it was small and slippery. As she got comfortable we increased the size. It's still not big pieces, but big enough she can feed herself now. We recently started soft pasta and shredded chicken. I just boiled the chicken and shredded it a lot. She was able to pick up "strings" of it herself. Other snacks she enjoys now are yogurt bites, Cheerios, strawberries, watermelon, kiwi, cantaloupe, and small pieces of cheese.

Thanks ladies!  We are also dealing with a lot of food allergies so moving to solids has been a slow process for us (although he loves it all thank goodness.... at least that part has been easy).  This has been a huge help!

  • My advice is the same as everyone else. We've had success with soft fruits and soft veggies. However, we tried ground beef the other night since it crumbles easily and she just kept chewing and then pocketing them in her cheeks instead of swallowing. I ended up having to take them all out. Not sure why she wouldn't swallow, as for the slippery fruits, I sprinkle some Cheerio dust in them and that seems to give her some grip.

Honestly, at this point I don't worry about size (except to make sure it isn't choking hazard size). Other than that, I go with whatever shape the food is in.

I am lazy...S.'s food doesn't get any special treatment unless absolutely necessary. I just take something off my plate and hand it to him.

ETA: I saw someone mentioned dicing apples small and totally LOL. He gets half, quarter, or a slice, depending on how J. and A. want theirs. Why does an apple need to smaller than that?

  • Amief, thanks for posting, I'm having trouble with this as well. Food allergies certainly complicate things. Good Luck!
  • Chewing, tongue control, gag reflex all develop at different rates for each baby. Just take cues from your LO; if he's having a hard time you can scale back. If small pieces are no problem, maybe go a little larger or offer a new texture.
