Massage

I am getting a massage after work today (can't wait!) My masseuse is trained in prenatal...but, is there anything I should be cautious of? I'm guessing since I'm in the second tri with a bump, that I should lay on my side. What about on my back? It isn't uncomfortable yet...any thoughts or tips? Thanks! PS- feel free to be jealous!

Re: Massage

  • If it's a prenatal massage I'm sure they have a table that has an indent for the baby bump so you can lay on your stomach.

  • That sounds really nice! I could go for one right about now. MH bought me a prenatal massage package that I'm waiting to use. I'd love to hear how your goes today!

As far as laying on your back - my OB said I'd know when I can't anymore (ie my body would tell me). I imagine the massage therapist will know all about that and hopefully, like pp said, have the table with the hole for your bump! Have fun!

They will have you on your sides only. They will likely prop you with pillows. Enjoy!
  • I started on my back for a short time and then on my sides with tons of pillows. It was great. I agree with PP the thought if belly hanging through a hole sounds horribly uncomfortable.

  • With my first I got weekly prenatal massages for the last two months of my pregnancy. It was amazing and I'm very jealous.

You should be primarily your side during the massage. Being on your back for too long after 12 or 14 weeks could possibly cut off some blood flow to the baby and so should be avoided. (That's what my OB said anyway, but I don't remember the exact week.) A good prenatal massage therapist will have all the right pillows to make you very comfortable on both sides.
  • Thanks everyone! They had pillows and I stayed on my side. It was GLORIOUS! I highly recommend!
  • I go next week for my second so far this pregnancy. I just realized my coverage through DH's insurance is the same as mine which means I can go 14 times before baby is born and it will only cost me about $100 out of pocket! Because I'm going every 3 weeks or so I have them focus on my hips and legs only doing one side per 30 minute session. It's AMAZING!

  • I'm a massage therapist and do tons of prenatal massages. Yor therapist will know about positioning. We always tell clients to let us know if they're uncomfortable. Biggest thing is lying on your back - this is perfectly fine as long the entire pregnancy as they bolster the right hip to displace the artery. I always tell me clients that when they are lying on their back to let me know if they get dizzy, numbers or just aren't comfortable. I use a pregnancy pillow so clients can lie on their stomach, I have a different one for every trimester to accommodate the belly. Side lying is great too, and some are more comfortable with this! I personally like lying on my stomach. As long as the pillow is good and supportive there are no issues. You will know if it's not comfortable!!
