Fetal Activity/Movement

My baby girl has had a couple of "lazy" days lately.  Saturday, she didn't move a ton and when she did it wasn't "strong".  Sunday-Tuesday, moved like crazy and super strong.  Told my doctor about it Monday, and he didn't seem concerned.  He told me to drink orange juice and lay on my side, which I've heard before, but are there any other suggestions? I'm at work right now and don't have OJ or a place to lie down.  Can poking/jostling my tummy get her motivated?  Any other tips? At what point is it concerning and I should contact the doc? I'm not concerned at this point, just bored and want to feel her and she's being stubborn.

Re: Fetal Activity/Movement

  • babies are going to have days of inactivity or if they are turned funny you might just not be sesitive to their movements.  It sounds like what you felt is normal.  They will be more sleepy when you are more active as well.

  • As long as you feel her everyday I wouldn't be concerned. There is no reason to drink extra sugar just to get her moving. I usually don't feel my LO much till I lay down for bed.
  • I don't know how far along you are, but I would let her be. Our little guy is usually pretty active (mostly when I'm sitting, reclining, eating or drinking something), but if he is EXTRA active on one particular day, the next he doesn't move hardly at all. They need to rest too, so if she's resting I would leave her alone.

I find that drinking cold water gets my LO kicking. And laying on left side without a doubt. But cold water does the trick if I can't lay down.

  • Sounds perfectly normal. There are some days I only feel him if I'm laying down on my side and even then it's just a few kicks, then there are other days I swear he's trying to kick right out of my stomach.
  • There are days my lo has slowed down a bit. I think he just got in a weird position and I wasn't feeling it as much. Today, at my appt, my midwife said it's time to start worrying about no movement. So, if I feel like he's not moving like usual, to lie on my side, drink on, and you should feel 10 movements in 2 hrs. Other things that get him moving is cold or hot drinks. You could try some ice cold water.

  • totally normal for baby to have "lazy" days as well as super active ninja gaiden ones.  Sounds like your OB already gave you the best advice on what to do if you are worried and want to try and induce movement.

  • I would love to use the way that the doc told me, but I'm at work and have nowhere to lie down and nothing to drink but semi-cold water.  That's why I wanted to get some other tips on trying to motivate her that don't involve lying down.

  • I'm 27w1d and my little guy is the same way. Absolutely insane crazy nonstop movements a few days in a row, then quiet a few days. I hate the quiet days!!!
  • Sounds like everything is ok...like PP said, active days and quiet days are normal. I usually have an easier time feeling my munchkin if I'm sitting slouched over. I think it cramps her style and she gives me a few swift kicks to tell me to sit up. It's also easier to feel her changing position and rolling when I'm sitting like that.

This past weekend baby went from tons of movement to just about nothing for 2 days.  The movements I did feel were very very mild.  I was worried, of course, and sent my midwife an email.  She called and said it was perfectly normal and nothing to be concerned about at this point (28 weeks).  Fast forward to last night and baby was more active and visible than I have EVER seen or felt.  It was insane how much he or she was beating up my insides.  It was so much to the point where it was painful.  So, in all I went through about 2 days of inactivity, 2 days of mild activity and then out of nowhere...it was like I had a new baby inside me that felt twice the size he or she normally feels.  So, maybe it was a sleepy few days because of a growth spurt, but hopefully your little one perks up soon as well!

Also, wanted to add that while I wasn't feeling any movement nothing was working to get baby going...laying on my right side usually does it and that didn't work.  Ice water didn't work, sugary drinks didn't work, sounds, flashlight...none of the usual tricks.  So, I would maybe just give it a few days and see what happens.  Easier said than done...I know :)

  • If I haven't felt him for a while (like this morning), I usually poke him a little or push on the side of my stomach and I can usually get a few kicks out of him. I totally understand though about it making you nervous. Mine was ninja active Sunday but has been calmer the past few days.

  • I just got a tip that if you get super nervous about movement go ahead and try tying a soft belt(bath rope belt or a long scarf)around your abdomen just tight enough to sort of irritate them, they don't like their space being messed with so they will probably try to kick it away.  But I'm gonna go with PP's, you're probably just fine.  Grab that water, and maybe dig up a snack.  If you haven't consumed calories lately baby may be sleeping or conserving energy,

  • The next day after I posted this, she was moving like crazy!!! Must have just been having a lazy day.  She has also found my ribs which is awesome- NOT! And the other night she was tap dancing on my uterus which I think was less comfortable than my ribs!  As uncomfortable as it is, though, I'm  grateful to feel her and know she's all good!
  • I just wish I could tell what body part I'm feeling when she moves, since I can't usually feel her from the outside.

I had a dream the other night, after a particularly active movement day, that she could grab my finger with her hand through my belly... needless to say it was a freaky dream!  Could you imagine?!
  • Ah!! I had this similar dream twice!
  • I know I'm only carrying one, but some days I feel like there's at least 2 or 3 in there. When she moves I feel it on both sides at the same time, like she's hitting me with her hands above her head and kicking me at the same time.
