Cloth Diapering

The stinkies

I have some BG 2.0s or 3.0s (the sized AIOs...don't remember which they are), and they were used before I used them with DD1 enough that I needed to replace the elastic. Well...the MF now has the stinkies. :( I tried a hot water strip and then washed with Tide instead of my normal Charlie's and then a bunch more rinses...thought they smelled better, used them once, and NOPE! Ugh. Am I SOL? I mean, they've had a good, long life, but I really like them as a trimmer option before moving onto OS dipes. Anything else I should try?

Yep, also tried bleach and lots of rinses.

Um, I thought I had lots of knowledge. :-/ HE top loader, rinse and spin (been trying warm since cold wasn't working for these diapers), heavy duty wash with 2 scoops of Charlie's, extra rinse. I've been doing this for 15 months, so I really do know what I'm doing, I promise! Tide all the time isn't an option due to sensitivity, and none of my other diapers or inserts have this problem, just these super old used ones.

  • Seems like you are doing everything right.  Do you have hard water?  If so, have you tried the Charlie's booster?  Also if you have hard water over time the minerals can build up.  Esp. on synthetics.  Maybe a strip with RLR or Washing Soda would work.

More moderate water than hard. Maybe I'll try some RLR. I've always done a bleach and hot water strip every few months on my BG inserts when they start to get stinky, and that's always done the trick, but I guess these are older, and I don't know what the previous owner did to them. Thanks!

That was my next suggestion, washing soda or RLR strip.

That's probably why you went so long with them doing great.  But over time that build-up can happen.  As you probably know bleach and hot water can fix other stinkies but not minerals.  So I would most def get some RLR- I find that more effective than washing soda IMO.
  • I do too! Over 20 either used for about a month or brand new.

  • These are AIOs, so if the MF is shot, they're not useable--I already have bamboo that I use in my pockets! And they're smalls, so I used them maybe 4 months with DD1 before she fit into all of her OS diapers.

I don't know anything about the older BG... any way to remove the MF?

I mean, I suppose I could take a seam ripper to the entire thing and see what happens, but...I'm not sure I care enough about these diapers to do that, ha. I'll try RLR first. If you can't tell, the aplix is also on its last leg....

  • Might be a stupid suggestion, but have you sunned them for a few days?

Like...leave them in the sun for multiple days, or just have I done it recently? I haven't hung diapers outside at all since DD2 was born because I can barely find time to just do laundry indoors, ha. Not a stupid suggestion, actually a good one that hadnt even crossed my mind!

Yeah, I was wondering if you had left them in the sun outside for multiple days.  I know that always helps us!  Good luck!
