Reflux Mamas: Pissed

DS is refluxing still today now only after his feedings but is absolutely inconsolable. He is eating 6 oz every 2 1/2 -3 hours on Alimentum. He was getting 5 oz every three hours when we were thickening with oatmeal.  DH called the Pedi GI to tell them the Zantac isn't working. Their solution? Don't feed him so much. Make him wait 4 hours and give him water in between. My DS is sleeping 10-12 hours/night. If I go every 4 hours during the day he will be getting 18 oz a day. Then - this is the really good part - they want us to give him BENADRYL to make him less irritable. Yea lets not deal with the issue at hand. Lets just drug him up with Benadryl and make him sleep. Are you serious?

Am I overreacting? I am currently in the process of looking for a new Pedi GI.

  • Poor little guy!  I don't think you're overreacting at all.  It really does sound like the doc is not actually treating the reflux, but simply treating all of the effects of the reflux instead.  I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this!  Hugs.

  • Oh wow - I do feel for you! My DS has reflux as well -- we feed Alimentum and thicken with Simply Thick (purchased at our hospital pharmacy) Pedi did not want us using cereal or oatmeal. I have never heard of Benedryl in that situation!! I don't think you are overreacting at all!
  • why don't they give you a rx for prevacid or prilosec?  they are a step up from the zantac

  • Not sure about the doctor telling you about using Benedryl - that would worry me - however, I am wondering if you doctor is being cautious about giving your DC an Rx that is a little more potent...if your DC is sleeping 10-12 hours through the night - I would hesitate to think if it was reflux (I am not a doctor...but having gone through it with my child I just wonder).  My daughter was diagnosed with reflux and we used Zantac - she seems to have grown out of it now that she is eating cereal and fruits - however, she had the worst time sleeping at night laying down and sleeping at a two hour clip was a dream to me - that was if we were lucky!

I understand what your saying. He was diagnosed at the hospital though after choking sessions and seizure like movements. He also had the Upper GI test. I am wondering if there is something more going on besides reflux. I think that is why they are trying the Alimentum.

  • I would defnitely try another opinion!!  Just for the mere fact that the Dr. recommended Bendryl - that is just really weird!
