Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Rolling over

My DD IS 5.5 months, last month rolled from tummy to back once, and has not done it again. We do tummy time. Should I be concerned? Did anyone else's babies roll over late?

Re: Rolling over

  • My DS was 5 months last Fri and hasn't rolled over unassisted. I was a little worried, being a first time mom, but felt reassured as my friend's DS is 8 months old and barely rolls over. I think all babies are different and do it on their own time.

  • I believe 4 to 6 months is average for rolling. Typically front to back comes first. I was sure my LO was going to roll back to tummy first because she had been rolling onto her side and even further but she would always flip back over before figuring out how to pull her arm out from under her body. Then one day at about 4.5 months she rolled tummy to back and has maybe done it a dozen times in the last 3 weeks. She once did it 3x in a row, but usually only does it once. Anywho, I don't think you're late for this milestone and it is supposed to be one that is commonly skipped. Unless your baby is failing to meet other physical milestones I wouldn't worry at all.
  • My LO started rolling over from back to tummy unassisted just all of a sudden last week when he turned 16 weeks. I was surprised b/c we didn't do tummy time that much. He would always just lay on his face and cry. Then out of the blue he just flipped over and started holding his head up. Still not going from tummy to back yet, although I'm not worrying about it too much. He'll be rolling all over the place!

So, just be patient. Every baby does things in their own time.

Mine has been doing back to tummy since 3.5 months, about 15 weeks and it's driving me nuts because he can't stand being on his tummy that long and can't roll the other way. He doesn't even try to roll to his back!

Oh I know! I have been trying to show Nicholas how to flip back over each time he does this so that maybe he will catch on one day soon. Its like as soon as I put him down on his blanket for playtime he automatically flips over on his tummy, then maybe 15 seconds into it, he's ready to roll back, but he can't.
