3rd Trimester

Insomnia

If you had it, what helped?  I've tried the whole night routine & sleep hygiene, reading, night meditation, relaxation, etc. I can't use Benadryl, it has the opposite effect on me. I did not fall asleep last night until 6 am. I have a 20 month old, so this is not going to work.

I wish I could help you. It's 2am and I'm right here with you :(

  • I had diagnosed insomnia before pregnancy and had an RX for Ambien for it, which is safe during pregnancy.

I've started to take it now to sleep at night, due to restless leg and I'm just very, very uncomfortable. I've slept great for the last few days!

  • That sucks.  How many weeks are you?  I had been sleeping pretty decently (for me) until very recently.  But after exhausting myself Saturday and feeling ready to collapse to sleep, it still took me about 4 hours to get to sleep that night.  And that was with Benadryl, 2 white noise machines, relaxing with reading, and my Rainbow Relaxation track (which I listened to 4 consecutive times, to no avail.)

I think I'm just getting to the point where sleep is a challenge.

  • I've had some sleepless nights when I was expecting.....my feet used to get really cold and I always had nausea.
  • Tylenol PM
  • Like pp, I was diagnosed with insomnia before pregnancy, so I can commiserate. My OB doesn't agree with my other doctors that my sleeping & other meds should be continued during pregnancy, so it has been a struggle.
OB finally okayed taking 1 melatonin at bed time, but wouldn't approve Benadryl or Tylenol pm. From what I understand- his views on medication are extremely strict compared to others, so definitely talk to your dr before taking anything.
In my case I had been awake 3 days straight and thought I was losing my mind before he okayed the melatonin. I'm now getting a couple of hours a night.
    Better than none...
  • Gravol is safe in pregnancy. It's sedating. I believe it's called Dramamine in the US.
  • If you want some natural options -- my midwives recommended something called calms forte and passionflower tincture. Those helped the first few weeks I was having issues. But now I have been struggling with full-blown insomnia as I near the end of my pregnancy and nothing seems to help. And if one more person tells me its just training for when teh baby comes, I may lose my mind. (half joking). Good luck (from another preggers lady up at 2 am)!

  • I'm so relieved to hear I'm not the only one.  I love sleep, but in the past 3 nights I'm lucky if I've got 6 hours of good sleep under my belt, but last night was the worst of all.  Now I feel like I'm coming down with a cold, I'm all congested...that should help...not at all!!!!!!

I agree with pp about the "prepping for the baby" comments, it is one thing to not sleep because you need to take care of your crying/hungry/wet child, and quite another to have your own mental facilities (or lack there of) preventing you from sleeping.

  • I'm struggling with insomnia and RLS as well. My OB doesn't want me to take anything stronger than Benadryl or Tylenol PM. I miss my Ambien!

I am so over the "Haha! Your body is just getting you ready for the baby!" comments. That is a whole different kind of sleep deprived and it makes me want to punch someone in the tit.
