Trouble TTC

AMH?

Good morning everyone, Have any of you had your AMH level checked? I had never heard of it and my RE told me it checks your "egg reserve". My level came back as being .96 which I was told was quite low. She said they expect a level of 1 in a 40 year old, I'm 29. As I've researched it more I see some conflicting info. Mainly people saying it's a new test and therefore the reliability has not been established yet. Should I be worried? Will I hit menopause by 35?

Re: AMH?

  • Mine was 1.6 or 1.7 and I'm 40 but I was 39 when it was tested about 6 months ago. My Dr even said mine was good for my age but I don't know exactly what it means. I see a huge range of levels from ppl on here.
    Fucking bump!!!!

  • Hello! I have been diagnosed with low AMH as well .88 two months ago and I'm 31. From what my Doctor has told me is AMH only reflects the amount of eggs you have left and does not reflect the quality. AMH is only one level out of the many that gives them an indication of what is going on. What is your FSH? That level should be below 10. If you just have low amh things should be fine, you will just need some help. My RE told me age is the best indicator for success. Start taking CoQ10 2x a day and vitamine D and C.
  • Thanks! I can't recall my FSH level at the moment but my doctor has never said anything about it so I assume it's fine. I'm taking D and C already. Hopefully the IUI will work!

My AMH was 1.2 a year ago at 32.  I just had it retested and it was .52.  However, my AFC was 20 or 21 and my LH and FSH was really, really good.

My nurse said that AMH is a really new test and my new reading--though surprising--doesn't change my treatment.  It may simply indicate that I don't stimulate as easily as others do, but we already knew that from IVF #1.

    Good luck to you!

ETA: I took 4000 IU of vitamin d for 6 months and it didn't help my number, but others have reported that it did.

  • I was told that a low AMH means there are not a lot of egg follicles developing, because AMH is produced by the helper cells surrounding each developing egg. If you have a normal antral follicle count, that should offset the low AMH number.

  • My RE said pretty much the same thing that @ronniesgirl1981 said.  He doesn't like it when people assume it correlates to the number of eggs you have (especially if you're border line low).  And it doesn't mean you will hit menopause early, b/c there are so many other factors involved.  But a low AMH does mean you could have a lower response to meds.  For example, on my IVF cycles I've had 4-10 follicles, whereas others have in the teens or 20s.  IUIs you may have 2 follies on meds instead of 4.

Your RE doesn't seem quite as conservative as others b/c you are borderline on the average.  Maybe you're a little young to be right below the "normal" mark, but no reason to be too concerned, yet.  And it seems like you RE doesn't have the best way of saying things...if my RE told me I had the fertility numbers of someone 11 years older strictly based off my AMH number, I would have stressed out, too.

  • @gsancho‌, you are right, my RE doesn't always have the best way of saying things. But I feel very confident in her work so i deal with the rest. Thanks to everyone who has commented. I was initially very upset about the results but through hearing others experience and doing my own research I'm not as stressed about it as before. If I ever get to the point of IVF, I'm guessing I won't respond as well to meds as others do. This past cycle of IUI my meds were increases and I got 2 good follies from it. I'm in the 2ww at the moment so we shall see!
  • I also have slightly low AMH (mine is 12 using Canadian measurements, and my RE said normal would be at least 15). My RE has also advised that AMH measures egg quantity, not quality. I have tried to take some comfort in that, but it's hard. I was upset about the results at first. I think it's totally fair to feel frustrated about something that's completely out of your control. I don't like getting a low score on anything!

I'm starting IVF later this summer, and my RE has mentioned that she doesn't anticipate I will respond well to meds given my low AMH. She has also recommended I take some male hormones (androgen?) while stimming because this can apparently help women with low AMH. She also recommended ICSI because she doesn't think I'll get many eggs. I guess we'll see how it goes!

    I take CoQ10, Vitamin D, etc.

    Good luck with your cycle.

Official diagnosis: Unexplained IF. I am 32. I have low ovarian reserve (low AMH), and poor egg quality. I've also been diagnosed with mild glandular developmental arrest (lining problems, detected with EFT).

We are using open ID donor sperm. IUIs #1-7=BFN. IVF September 2014 antagonist protocol, 8R,5M,3F, 5 day transfer of 1 morula = BFN. IVF#2 planned for January 2015 (antagonist protocol + HGH).

  • For what it's worth, my friend who was diagnosed with a low AMH got pregnant with twins on her second round of clomid...not everyone is that fortunate, but goes to show, you never know :)
