how do you get baby's arms under control when latching on?

My little one struggles with me so much when I try to latch her on. Her arms are flying every where and I try to tuck them between her and my other breast or between them, but nothing seems to help. She gets more frustrated and so do I. But if I dont my already really sore nipples get scretched and pinched every two seconds or she sticks her hand in her mouth. It takes sometimes 20 mins... I need some encouragement, this is so hard!

  • have you tried the football hold? it helps me because he is kinda tucked under my arm and it's easier to hold his one arm and the other i tuck under my breast.
  • UGH, it's painful, isn't it!! I use blankets to tether them down or I have someone else hold them while I get her latched on.

  • Ditto swaddle--the only way I could keep DD from breaking her latch those first few weeks. Once I figured that out we had smooth sailing.
  • When his arms are flapping (note: I cradle hold), I tuck one arm under my armpit and grab the other with my opposite hand. If he needs help getting the latch, I can still hold his "top" arm with my opposite hand and use a few fingers to squeeze my breast til he gets a good latch.
  • Have you tried a different position? She may not like the position you are using.Maybe try holding her hand and rubbing it that might help too.
  • I usually swaddle him (always a night) and I should just swaddle him every feeding b/c it makes it so much easier. Otherwise he is flailing around , acting crazy and grabbing my b00bs and sticking his hands in his mouth.
