Fussy baby? Need advice.

I wasn't sure where this would fit so I figured I'd just start my own post.  If this has been discussed elsewhere, can someone link me?

D is a super fussy baby... like, if he's awake, he's screaming.  I swear I'm not exaggerating.  He cries every moment of every day.  This has been going on since he was about 3 weeks old.  The only thing that makes him scream less is if I walk/bounce around the house with him.  I get that some babies are fussier than others, but it can't be normal for a baby to cry constantly, right?  There should be moments where I can lay him down and talk/sing to him or rock him to sleep.  These things have literally never happened.  I mentioned calling the pediatrician and having him seen and my H kind of made me feel like I was overreacting.  What do you think?  Is this worth a trip to the pediatrician to make sure nothing is wrong or do I just need to suck it up and wait out the fussiness?

You are the mom, trust your gut. If you feel like something is wrong take him to the pediatrician

  • Yeah. I'd call. At least if there's nothing wrong physically and he's a high need baby, you'll know and can relax about that aspect.

  • In my experience, nothing beats mother's intuition. If you feel like something isn't right, take him to the Pediatrician. I'm on baby number three and none of mine have ever fussed more than an hour or so, they usually tire out. Of course my son is formula fed and pretty much wakes only to eat and get changed, then hangs out awake for two hours or so in the mornings. It could be colic or something that isn't agreeing with his tummy.

I don't see the harm in calling the dr.

I hope it gets better soon!

  • Glad you're taking him in! Mine has been pretty fussy too & the doctor is doing a stool test to make sure she doesn't have a tummy problem. I hope you find out what's going on with your LO soon, the crying is so hard to handle sometimes!
  • Definitely go to pedi. My DS screams for hours at a time, it's heart breaking and wearing us thin. Yesterday at his one month check up, he screamed in front of the pediatrician (and entire office!). His doctor said that is not a normal scream, and now we're working on making him feel better. Changing my diet, supplementing with dairy free formula, trying Prilosec, etc. If it's colic, I hope it phases itself out soon!

  • My baby is super fussy as well and DH was reluctant at first that anything was wrong until he stayed home with me one day, after that he understood. We saw the Ped and she diagnosed what we were experiencing as silent reflux. We took video of his worst episode, he had certain screams that were heartbreaking.  He is on Zantac now, he was clearly in pain and it has helped. He still cries just not all the time now! I have found that the 5 S have worked to calm him in the crazy spells. Hopefully the Dr can help.  Hang in there!

  • I am breastfeeding and it seems like she is attached to me always hungry. Had month check up yesterday. Dr doesn't think I am producing enough milk to keep up with her growing spurts.
We had to supplement formula in the beginning due to her jaundice was so bad. Now have to again.
She just never seems to settle down.

Started formula and breastmilk and today she is asleep in her swing for more than 5 mins.

I have a feeling she just wasn't getting enough from me. Now I will see how it goes at night.

I would call the Dr. Will not hurt to call.

    Keep us posted.

DS has been pretty fussy too. His seems to be due to gas. Gripe water seems to have helped.
