Anyone else know this is your last pregnancy?

DH is getting a V later this month. Anyone else taking the permanent birth control approach after this? How are you feeling about the decision? How does that effect how you feel about this pregnancy?

I know I'm getting too old for this pregnancy thing and I know three is plenty for us.  I wish I could say that I was relishing this pregnancy more as it will be my last, but that would be a lie. It's much more painful than my previous ones have been. It's much more challenging emotionally. I've never been prone to mood swings either in PMS or previous pregnancies...but I'm all over the board on this one.

Yet there is still a little part of me that wants to delay the permanent procedure. I won't.  It's the right decision for the right reasons...so I'm hoping this wishy washy feeling is just a pregnancy thing ... I get very indecisive when I am pregnant.

Oh yes!  I've already signed the tubal consent form and they reconfirmed it when they scheduled my RCS.  I'm sure I'll have to confirm again in the hospital but DH and I have always known we'd be done after 2.  I just cannot convince him to get a vasectomy while his ship is underway and I can't imagine why this makes him pale!  LOL, it's actually very common in the Navy!  But since I'll be sliced open and really do not want to go back on any sort of hormonal birth control I'm going for the tubal.

I don't enjoy being pregnant and I don't enjoy newborns, so this might be terrible but every milestone I pass is a "Hey, I never have to do this again!" moment for me.

This will be my last too. I'm 37 and DH is 41. We've had a difficult time conceiving. I've also had 2 miscarriages and don't want to go through that again.
  • This is definitely our last planned pregnancy. I have been working on DH since we got pregnant trying to convince him about getting snipped, and while he is theoretically on board as he definitely is done after 2, I know he also doesn't want to think about/face the actual procedure yet. So we will see how long it takes for him to schedule it after baby arrives... we both hate condoms.

This was us last time.  Which is how we ended up here a third time.  This is also why I'm not even suggesting him not following through on his appointment this month.
  • We're done! If I for some reason need a c section I will get a tubal done. If not DH will be getting a vasectomy. We haven't scheduled it yet but plan on getting it done before the end of the year for insurance purposes. I don't want to go through another pregnancy for my first I was 22 just turned 23 the month before he is born. This time I am 30 and the difference in the till it has taken on my body is crazy!

I feel the same way about pregnancy and newborns. If we hadn't planned ahead to have 2, I might have stopped at 1. As it is, this is definitely our last kid. DH is still considering the snip, so in the meantime I'm just getting an IUD. I use the copper one, so no hormones.
  • Yes, H and I are both getting permanent procedures done after DD comes. This is our third and final baby. I feel okay about it. I'm sure I'll get baby fever but I'll get over it. We are done.

  • Yes totally done I've signed my tubal papers. Dh will be getting snipped but he is so lazy when it comes to getting things done I would rather just get it over and done with so no oops baby happens.

  • YES!!! I am in this boat for sure. We are DONE. I was talking with my OB about essure- but reading recent articles has me running scared. I think for now I will go with the IUD option and then have DH get a vasectomy fairly soon.

DH and I are done, we are just trying to decide if I am going to get a tubal or he is going to get a V.  A tubal would be much easier, since I am having a RCS - and my deductible will be met for the year.  But I'm a little tiny, irrationally afraid of the 2% failure rate, and the fact that a failure can lead to ectopic pregnancy.  Anyone else who has decided on a tubal have any advice on how to get over my irrational fear?

But it would be sooo nice to not have to worry about BC after this baby comes and just have it be taken care of.

  • #2 for us and we are done.  DH still isn't happy about having 2 and I had three miscarriages between DS and LO - never want to go thru that again.

  • For sure this is my last. My tubal procedure is set for 8 weeks pp and I'm asking tomorrow about ablation too. That way I won't get a period anymore. That would be fantastic.

  • @lappyfoinker‌ my OB pushed essure at first. I've heard the bad side effects, and I have an issue with ANY foreign material being in my body. Metal coils, iud, etc. I'm for sure about not having any more kids so the permanent fix is my route.

Essure is a quick procedure with little recovery. (Why it was pushed by my doc)I don't care though. I'm on leave anyway, so I'm getting 2 more weeks of STD pay. I'm hitting my out of pocket max with the labor/delivery so I'm opting for the procedure, with no foreign objects in my body. No one knows the long term effects (talking 20-30 years from now god willing)

Also, done. This is our third and we will look to foster/adopt if we choose to grow the family any larger. DH is getting a vasectomy, which I thought I'd be excited/relieved about, but it is definitely bittersweet.

  • This is my last. We're not sure what to do in terms of how well be preventing but this is certainly my last.

  • Yep. We're a "one and done" family. Hubby is getting the V about 30-60 days after I give birth so it falls on this year's insurance term.

  • I am getting a tubal ligation during my RCS. I have no hesitation as to this decision. It is a financial reason mainly, we want to be able to provide for our children and can not do that if we have more. It is also emotional, I feel "full filled" with our family of four and I know my limits. I can not picture myself with three kids. I do not know how I am even going to handle two.

     I also hate being pregnant.
    Love my daughters.
    Hate the pregnant part.

  • We're done with 3 for sure.  Until DS#2 came we thought we were done at 2.  But...we changed our minds and decided we wanted just 1 more.

My H will be getting a V eventually.  Not sure when.

I don't want to deal with any birth control for myself.  Like a PP said, I don't want anything in my body like an IUD, I just don't feel comfortable with that.  And I'm done with hormonal birth control.  We've always used condoms between kids, since we always knew we'd by trying again before long.  We risked it a few times when I was almost positive I was not fertile.

Since a V is less invasive than a tubal, H will be getting that done.

  • @MsGrace2003 - there are a LOT of stories about essure and its side effects for many women on the Erin Brockovich class action page. I had mirena for 3 years before this kiddo and didn't have any issues- so I am comfortable with that. But the metal in these coils and the fear of the unknown - as it is such a new procedure, just made me second guess it. Plus DH seemed fine with getting snipped in the near future. It's time HE did something for a change.

I certainly hope this is my last pregnancy.  I hate being pregnant, seriously hate.  We have not discussed permanent BC yet.  If we decide we want to grow our family, we will explore adoption.

This is our last hopefully.  I'm getting an IUD after this til DH gets the snip. I just want to deliver a healthy baby before he does it.  I say hopefully because I've gotten pregnant twice now while breastfeeding and with no period while on the mini pill.  I haven't had a period since before I conceived my oldest so like 3.5 years now.  Statistically that's pretty ridiculous.  I'm terrified of being that person who got pregnant after a vasectomy or on an IUD.

  • I am seriously on the fence. I always pictured my life with two kids but this pregnancy has been the scariest thing I have ever been through. Between being told I miscarried, the doctor suggesting termination due to it being non viable, then everything turning out ok other than two major bleeds the first 13 weeks were an emotional nightmare. Then high bp starting at 31 weeks and bed rest the last 9 weeks. I just don't know if I could handle a second pregnancy. Especially already having a LO.
  • My husband and I have always wanted just two kids and since we're having twins, he's on board with getting a vasectomy after they're born.

We've always been super careful about birth control and always doubled up with both condoms and my pills. Then, when we started trying we got pregnant right away with twins. And, since if you have twins once, your odds go way up for having them again, we need to be extra careful!

I understand where you are coming from here.  With my first, I had a threatened miscarriage with our first with a lot of bleeding through the whole second trimester with severely restricted activity.  They wouldn't give us anything more than a 50% chance of success at any point.  The issues in that pregnancy were caused by a fibroid growing under the placenta.  My second and third pregnancies have had no issues.  Just a note to remember that every pregnancy is very different.  So unless they feel that your issues were caused by something that will definitely remain the same...you shouldn't expect a repeat performance.
  • This will be my 2nd and last pregnancy.  Before getting married we agreed that we would adopt, and are planning on having 3 children and in trying for this pregnancy who experienced losses and don't want to have to go thru that ever again.  But I'm not ready for the finalty of a tubal, so I'm planning on IUD at my 6 week apt, and V for DH later in life.

We've always said only 2. I haven't even thought twice about it.

DH tells everyone he'll slip and fall jumping over a rusty chain link fence if necessary.

I think that's his way of volunteering to get snipped.

  • we're definitely done. I liked my Mirena and wouldn't mind doing that again (such light periods!) but then it's dealing with Something every 5 years. Leaning more towards a Vas, but H hasn't investigated options. It would be nice to do in 2014 since my delivery will max out our OOP costs!

  • We are done at 2.  I'll be 41 later this month and will have 2 under 2 and have 2 dogs that still think they are puppies.  Irrationally I want a 3rd but it isn't going to happen and DH isnt on board with more than 2.
